Il saggio si sviluppa a partire dal ’47 con i primi passi nella storia della Repubblica e si spinge fino agli ultimissimi avvenimenti: la presa sempre maggiore del Movimento 5 Stelle e della Lega sul palcoscenico politico italiano e le conseguenze dell’epidemia di Covid-19. Federico Bini (Bagni di Lucca 1992) maturità classica e laurea in legge, svolge da anni un’intesa attività pubblicistica e di studio in ambito politico, giornalistico e storico. Collabora con diverse riviste d’informazione e approfondimento culturale e nel 2020 ha scritto Montanelli e il suo Giornale (Albatros editore) e Roberto Gervaso. L’ultimo dandy (L’Universale) assieme a Giancarlo Mazzuca. È stato condirettore del settimanale Il Caffè Ha scritto “Un passo dietro Craxi” (Edizioni WE 2021).

The current perception of democratic crisis in Western Europe gives a renewed urgency to a new perspective on the way democracy was reconstructed after World War II and the principles that underpinned its postwar transformation. This study accounts for the formation of the postwar democratic order in Western Europe by studying how the main political actors in France, West Germany and Italy conceptualized democracy and strove over its meaning. Based upon a wide range of librarian and archival sources from these countries, it tracks changing conceptions of democracy among leading politicians, political parties, and leaders of social movements, and unveils how they were deeply divided over key principles of postwar democracy – such as the political party, the free market economy, representation, and civic participation. By comparing three national debates on the question what democracy meant and how it should be institutionalized and practiced, this study argues that only in the 1970s conceptions of democracy converged and key political actors accepted each other as democrats with similar conceptions of democracy. This study thereby deconstructs the myth of the quick emergence of one consensual Western European model of democracy after 1945, demonstrates that its formation was a long and contentious process in which national differences were often of crucial importance, and contributes to an enhanced understanding of the historical roots of the current sentiment of democratic crisis.

On the Edge of Democracy examines the emergence of democracy in Italy in the wake of World War Two. It examines the nature of the democracy forged in the liminal period after Benito Mussolini, the Duce of Fascism, was removed from government in the summer of 1943. Instead of pouring through institutional accounts, which root the origins of democracy in the establishment of parties and in electoral outcomes, Forlenza focuses on the lived experiences of ordinary people and elites in extraordinary times. Meanings of democracy are not variations of a universal model but emerge as contingent interpretative acts and a symbolization following political and existential crisis under condition of violence and war. On the Edge of Democracy captures a series of key events which saw people torn between going home or staying at the front, between clinging to a disrespected but habitual monarchy or engaging with a republican experiment. Becoming a democracy was also a kind of politically spiritual act: the power of the myth of America and the struggle for order as a function of the cosmic fight between communism and ant-communism in the incipient Cold War had a formative power on the origins, meanings, and characters of post-fascist democracy in Italy.
