Julia Vigre es una involuntaria protagonista de la historia que ha vivido los cambios sociales más importantes del siglo xx en España, desde la Segunda República hasta su muerte en 2008. Este libro es más que una biografía, en él se narra con rigor y detalle cómo lo viejo, el pasado de Julia, los ideales por los que luchó, volvieron para hacerse futuro. Como muchas maestras de la República que quedaron en España, fue depurada de la Escuela pública en 1939. Sin embargo, desempeñó una labor muy importante de alfabetización. Julia nunca dejó de ejercer como maestra; maestra de adultas en las cárceles en los dos períodos en los que fue encarcelada de 1939 a 1943 y de 1945 a 1947; maestra en la escuela pública durante la Guerra y desde 1961 hasta su jubilación. Nacida en 1916, pertenece a la primera generación de mujeres que gozó de los derechos sociales políticos y civiles que concedió la II República; fue también la primera que perdió todo lo que vivió en su juventud. Su vida es una lucha encarnizada, con años de cárcel y de silencio. Asumió como natural la coeducación, el laicismo, la participación de la mujer en el campo profesional, o la igualdad de género, algo que hoy consideramos normal, pero a lo que maestras como Julia dedicaron su vida y por lo que fueron castigadas.

Carlos Santacara realiza un exhaustivo trabajo de documentación e investigación sumergiéndose en todos los documentos referidos a la Primera Guerra Carlista que se encuentran tanto en los archivos británicos como en otras bibliotecas. Fruto de este trabajo ha conseguido elaborar un texto que sirve tanto para explicar cómo era la España de la época así como los entresijos de la guerra y su influencia en el mapa europeo. En la Primera Guerra Carlista, 1833-1840, la participación británica no fue decisiva, como lo había sido en la Guerra de la Independencia veinte años antes. El número de tropas británicas nunca llegó a los 10.000 en un momento dado, y su participación no fue más allá del País Vasco, Cantabria y provincia de Burgos. Sin embargo, oficiales británicos actuaron por toda España colaborando con los ejércitos españoles, y ayudando a humanizar la guerra tanto en el frente del Norte, un hecho conocido en España, como en Levante, algo no tan conocido. En el plano diplomático, George Villiers llegó a Madrid como embajador británico el día anterior a la muerte de Fernando VII, y siguiendo las instrucciones del ministro británico de Exteriores, Palmerston, tuvo una participación muy activa en la vida política española, y llegó a tener gran influencia en algunas de sus decisiones. Todo esto está reflejado en el libro usando fuentes impresas y docenas de manuscritos inéditos de los archivos británicos.
