Overwriting the Dictator is literary study of life writing and dictatorship in Americas. Its focus is women who have attempted to rewrite, or overwrite, discourses of womanhood and nationalism in the dictatorships of their nations of origin. The project covers five 20th century autocratic governments: the totalitarianism of Rafael Trujillo’s regime in the Dominican Republic, the dynasty of the Somoza family in Nicaragua, the charismatic, yet polemical impact of Juan and Eva Perón on the proletariat of Argentina, the controversial rule of Fidel Castro following Cuba’s 1959 revolution, and Augusto Pinochet’s coup d'état that transformed Chile into a police state. Each chapter traces emerging patterns of experimentation with autobiographical form and determines how specific autocratic methods of control suppress certain methods of self-representation and enable others. The book foregrounds ways in which women’s self-representation produces a counter-narrative that critiques and undermines dictatorial power with the depiction of women as self-aware, resisting subjects engaged in repositioning their gendered narratives of national identity.

To Defend this Sunrise examines how black women on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua engage in regional, national, and transnational modes of activism to remap the nation’s racial order under conditions of increasing economic precarity and autocracy. The book considers how, since the 19th century, black women activists have resisted historical and contemporary patterns of racialized state violence, economic exclusion, territorial dispossession, and political repression. Specifically, it explores how the new Sandinista state under Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has utilized multicultural rhetoric as a mode of political, economic, and territorial dispossession. In the face of the Sandinista state’s co-optation of multicultural discourse and growing authoritarianism, black communities have had to recalibrate their activist strategies and modes of critique to resist these new forms of “multicultural dispossession.” This concept describes the ways that state actors and institutions drain multiculturalism of its radical, transformative potential by espousing the rhetoric of democratic recognition while simultaneously supporting illiberal practices and policies that undermine black political demands and weaken the legal frameworks that provide the basis for the claims of these activists against the state.

A principios del siglo XX los estudiosos pioneros sobre la migración mexicana hacia Estados Unidos identificaban como mexicanos a todos los migrantes, aun cuando ya había indicios de una diferenciación étnica dentro de dicha corriente migratoria. Dado que la migración desde muy temprano se definió como laboral y de trabajadores poco calificados, el componente de clase se dio por sentado. Sin embargo, el componente étnico no fue tan claro, tal vez porque en el contexto de la construcción del nacionalismo mexicano pareció inviable problematizar las diferencias étnicas, suponiendo que quedaban oscurecidas una vez cruzada la frontera mexicana. Este libro reúne una serie de trabajos que analizan la persistencia y la transformación de lo étnico a raíz de la migración internacional de mexicanos, principalmente de origen indígena, hacia Estados Unidos. El volumen ofrece distintas reflexiones sobre la transformación de las fronteras nacionales y étnicas a raíz de las migraciones internacionales de finales del siglo XX en un doble marco estatal. La frontera México-Estados Unidos es el escenario empírico de la reflexión sobre algunos de los cambios más significativos que alimentan la constitución de nuevas identidades étnicas transnacionales surgidas de las migraciones. Los trabajos analizan la condición ambigua de las fronteras estatales como espacios de fragmentación y a la vez de continuidad cultural, aportando una nueva forma de pensar el fenómeno migratorio entre ambos países.
