Novels such as One Hundred Years of Solitude have awakened English-language readers to the existence of Colombian literature in recent years, but Colombia has a well-established literary tradition that far predates the Latin American "boom." In this pathfinding study, Raymond Leslie Williams provides an overview of seventeen major authors and more than one hundred works spanning the years 1844 to 1987. After an introductory discussion of Colombian regionalism and novelistic development, Williams considers the novels produced in Colombia's four semi-autonomous regions. The Interior Highland Region is represented by novels ranging from Eugenio Díaz' Manuela to Eduardo Caballero Calderón's El buen salvaje. Esta es la primera reedición completa del Museo de cuadros de costumbres y va¬riedades (1866). Compuesta por 97 textos cortos y la primera impresión completa de la novela Manuela, de Eugenio Díaz, esta compilación fue editada por Vergara y Vergara como un álbum de recortes a partir de periódicos publicados desde 1846 y hasta 1866. A la manera de otras compilaciones, como Los españoles pintados por sí mismos (18431844) o Los cubanos pintados por sí mismos (1852), Vergara buscaba que el Museo representara el álbum familiar de Colombia. A partir de tipos humanos, eventos históricos y paisajes emblemáticos del país, el Museo debía ser leído no solo por un público colombiano, sino por uno español. Este libro es una obra mayor del siglo xix colombiano y una contribución clave de la cultura letrada decimonónica que ha permanecido al margen de los debates ac¬tuales sobre la época. Como pieza literaria, es una de las expresiones más acabadas del conservadurismo de mediados del siglo xix, en tanto propone a Colombia como una extensión de España. Como tal, el Museo fue una reacción a las reformas liberales de la época. Estas pretendían, por una parte, la independencia cultural frente a España y, por otra, a través de empresas estatales como la Comisión Co¬rográfica (18501859), organizar al país en torno a signos distintos a la religión católica o las costumbres hispanas. Aparte de enmarcar este texto en los debates acerca de las reformas liberales en Colombia, esta reedición inserta al Museo en el movimiento global de la escritura de tipos y costumbres y rescata del archivo los periódicos de los cuales Vergara extrajo sus cuadros. Contiene 32 ilustraciones de la cultura visual de la época.
