With a few exceptions, historiography has paid little attention to the impact of French economic thought during the American Revolution, focusing instead on the Revolution’s links with Britain. This book outlines how, from the mid-eighteenth to the early-nineteenth century, the political and social dimension of French economic thought, and particularly of Physiocracy, spurred American Republicans to a radical shaping of American agrarian ideology. Such a perspective allows for a reconsideration of several questions that lie at the heart of contemporary historiographic debate: the connection between politics and economics; the meaning of republicanism; the foundations of representation; the role of Europe in the Atlantic world; and the interaction between national histories and global context. In particular, the research methodology adopted here makes it possible to reconstruct how American national identity, conceived as an expression of society in economic terms, emerged through a cosmopolitan way of thinking focused on the uniqueness of the new state.

Questo volume si colloca letterariamente tra il diario, il saggio e la narrativa; ma soprattutto è e intende essere un documento. La prima persona narrante è un professore di liceo, e spesso la stesura è simile a una registrazione, cui s'accompagna, infittendosi mano a mano, ma sempre a caldo, la riflessione pedagogica, politica, morale. Si tratta dunque di un resoconto drammatico, dal di dentro di un edificio scolastico, intorno alla crisi che travaglia la scuola. Esso è anche il primo intervento di parte insegnante: rivela cioè come quella crisi sia vissuta non dai giovani contestatori (la cui esperienza è stata ormai sufficientemente testimoniata in editoria), ma dai professori che sono là, nella bagarre, giudici e imputati, protagonisti e minoranza silenziosa. Ciò che finirà per catturare maggiormente l'attenzione del lettore sarà proprio la figura che questo diario involontariamente delinea: un insegnante attento, democratico, simpatizzante, socialista, che l'estremismo dei gruppuscoli e il senso del proprio dovere professionale (o civile) inducono infine all'opposizione. Come si vede, nel microcosmo della scuola si rispecchiano ancora una volta una crisi e una vicenda più vaste, quelle che forse incombono su tutti noi.
