2022 International Labor History Association Book of the Year A dramatic, deeply researched account of how legal repression and vigilantism brought down the Wobblies—and how the destruction of their union haunts us to this day. In 1917, the Industrial Workers of the World was rapidly gaining strength and members. Within a decade, this radical union was effectively destroyed, the victim of the most remarkable campaign of legal repression and vigilantism in American history. Under the Iron Heel is the first comprehensive account of this campaign. Founded in 1905, the IWW offered to the millions of workers aggrieved by industrial capitalism the promise of a better world. But its growth, coinciding with World War I and the Russian Revolution and driven by uncompromising militancy, was seen by powerful capitalists and government officials as an existential threat that had to be eliminated. In Under the Iron Heel, Ahmed White documents the torrent of legal persecution and extralegal, sometimes lethal violence that shattered the IWW. In so doing, he reveals the remarkable courage of those who faced this campaign, lays bare the origins of the profoundly unequal and conflicted nation we know today, and uncovers disturbing truths about the law, political repression, and the limits of free speech and association in class society.

This carefully crafted ebook: "THE IRON HEEL (Political Dystopian Classic)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The year is 2600 AD or 419 B.O.M. (the Brotherhood of Man) when Anthony Meredith, a scholar from the future, comes across an important manuscript of Avis Everhard written around 1912-1932 when "Iron Heel" came to power in USA. "Iron Heel" is an oligarchic regime where the power and money is concentrated in the hands of a few rulers and Avis and her husband Ernest are involved in a conspiracy to overthrow it. Although Meredith knows the fate of Avis and Ernest but what they saw and suffered would shake you to the core. This novel is a prophetic dystopia that is said to have inspired George Orwell, the author of 1984, who described Jack London as having made "a very remarkable prophecy of the rise of Fascism". Orwell believed that Jack London's understanding of contemporary politics had made him a better prophet "than many better-informed and more logical thinkers." Jack London (1876–1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. He wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf.

The stage adaptation of Jack London's 1908 novel. The first modern dystopian novel, written by London as a socialist propaganda piece. An election between a socialist candidate and an oligarch. What happens if the oligarch wins? Adapted by Edward Einhorn, originally presented in New York on the 100th anniversary of London's death. Avis Everhard's diary provides the story of her husband Ernest, a young socialist revolutionary who gets caught up in historical events. Together, they try to resist the rise of a fascist America, under the Iron Heel of the oligarchs. The play is frameworked as a 27th Century Historical Reenactment Drama, presented in the socialist utopia London predicted in his prologue and footnotes. As onstage "historian," Antonia Meredith, comments on the events throughout. The play is punctuated by classic folk songs, with changed lyrics that comment on the action. The original novel was an inspiration for Orwell's 1984, and was praised in a book review by Leon Trotsky. "[The Iron Heel] serves up food for thought with an appealing heart-on-sleeve warmth. You may well find yourself humming some of those tunes on the way out." - Elizabeth Vincentelli, The New York Times "The production manages to give the story a deeper emotional impact thanks to the terrific cast...But most of all, the production brings alive the hope and horror of the revolutionaries who fought in the early 20th century in a way that feels relevant and contemporary to a modern audience." - Geoff Bailey, Socialist Workers "A solid introduction to Jack London and his work in a time wrought with doubts about the current economic and political landscape across the globe. Einhorn's adaptation is a testament to the idea that, sometimes, the best way to understand the past is the best way to understand the present." Sarah Weber, Theater is Easy "Edward Einhorn not only absorbed creatively the impetus given by Jack London'sThe Iron Heel but also thought over again in its light political discourse as a whole." - Alexandra Scaggs, The Financial Times

In May 1937, seventy thousand workers walked off their jobs at four large steel companies known collectively as “Little Steel.” The strikers sought to make the companies retreat from decades of antiunion repression, abide by the newly enacted federal labor law, and recognize their union. For two months a grinding struggle unfolded, punctuated by bloody clashes in which police, company agents, and National Guardsmen ruthlessly beat and shot unionists. At least sixteen died and hundreds more were injured before the strike ended in failure. The violence and brutality of the Little Steel Strike became legendary. In many ways it was the last great strike in modern America. Traditionally the Little Steel Strike has been understood as a modest setback for steel workers, one that actually confirmed the potency of New Deal reforms and did little to impede the progress of the labor movement. However, The Last Great Strike tells a different story about the conflict and its significance for unions and labor rights. More than any other strike, it laid bare the contradictions of the industrial labor movement, the resilience of corporate power, and the limits of New Deal liberalism at a crucial time in American history.

In 1902, Jack London purchased some secondhand clothes, rented a room in the East End, and set out to discover how the London poor lived. His research makes shocking reading. Moving through the slums as one of the poor; eating, drinking, and socializing with the underclass; lining up to get into a flophouse, London was scandalized and brutalized by the experience of living rough in Britain's capital. His clear-eyed reflections on the iniquities of class are a shaming testament to the persistence of social inequality in modern times.
