In "Under the Shadow of Etna: Sicilian Stories from the Italian of Giovanni Verga," the reader is immersed in a vivid tapestry of Sicilian life, where the influence of the majestic Mount Etna looms large over the struggles and aspirations of its inhabitants. Verga's literary style is characterized by his use of Verismo, a form of realism that emphasizes the gritty realities of life, infused with emotional depth and a profound sense of place. The collection showcases a variety of narratives that depict the hardships faced by rural Sicilians, illuminating themes of poverty, love, and the unyielding nature of fate, all steeped in the rich cultural milieu of 19th-century Italy. Giovanni Verga, one of Italy's most significant writers of the late 19th century, draws deeply from his Sicilian heritage, a backdrop that profoundly influences his portrayal of local customs and societal structures. Born in Catania, his firsthand observations of the peasant class and their struggles inform the stories within this collection. Verga's commitment to authentic representation and the exploration of human emotions positions him as a pioneering figure in the movement toward modern realism in literature. This collection is highly recommended for readers interested in exploring the intricate dynamics of Sicilian culture through masterful storytelling. Verga's ability to evoke empathy and understanding for his characters makes these tales not just narratives, but essential insights into the human condition. Engage with these stories to appreciate the timeless struggles and resilience of the Sicilian spirit.

A beautiful celebration of the power of hope, this New York Times bestselling novel tells the story of a girl who comes of age during the Cambodian genocide. You are about to read an extraordinary story, a PEN Hemingway Award finalist “rich with history, mythology, folklore, language and emotion.” It will take you to the very depths of despair and show you unspeakable horrors. It will reveal a gorgeously rich culture struggling to survive through a furtive bow, a hidden ankle bracelet, fragments of remembered poetry. It will ensure that the world never forgets the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime in the Cambodian killing fields between 1975 and 1979, when an estimated two million people lost their lives. It will give you hope, and it will confirm the power of storytelling to lift us up and help us not only survive but transcend suffering, cruelty, and loss. For seven-year-old Raami, the shattering end of childhood begins with the footsteps of her father returning home in the early dawn hours, bringing details of the civil war that has overwhelmed the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Soon the family’s world of carefully guarded royal privilege is swept up in the chaos of revolution and forced exodus. Over the next four years, as the Khmer Rouge attempts to strip the population of every shred of individual identity, Raami clings to the only remaining vestige of her childhood—the mythical legends and poems told to her by her father. In a climate of systematic violence where memory is sickness and justification for execution, Raami fights for her improbable survival. Displaying the author’s extraordinary gift for language, In the Shadow of the Banyan is a brilliantly wrought tale of human resilience.

The late Victorians had an insatiable appetite for the macabre and sensational: stories of murder and suspense, ghosts, the supernatural and the inexplicable were the stuff of life to them. The two writers in this volume well represent the last decade of the nineteenth century, and are of interest in themselves as well as for their contribution to the chilling of the Victorian spine. Mrs. Alfred Baldwin attempted as a child to contact her dead sister through a seance, and took to writing when stricken by a mysterious illness six weeks after marriage. She was also the mother of the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin. Lettice Galbraith is herself no less mysterious than the stories she wrote. She appeared on the literary scene in 1893, published a novel and two collections of stories in that year, a further story ("The Blue Room") in 1897, and then nothing more. Readers of 'The Empty Picture Frame', 'The Case of Sir Nigel Otterburne', 'The Trainer's Ghost' and 'The Seance Room' will recognise the Victorian spirit at its finest.
