Mechanical engineering, an engineering discipline born of the needs of the industrial revolution, is once again asked to do its substantial share in the call for industrial renewal. The general call is urgent as we face profound issues of productivity and competitiveness that require engineering solu tions, among others. The Mechanical Engineering Series is a new series, featuring graduate texts and research monographs, intended to address the need for information in contemporary areas of mechanical engineering. The series is conceived as a comprehensive one that will cover a broad range of concentrations important to mechanical engineering graduate edu cation and research. We are fortunate to have a distinguished roster of consulting editors, each an expert in one of the areas of concentration. The names of the consulting editors are listed on the first page of the volume. The areas of concentration are applied mechanics, biomechanics, computa tional mechanics, dynamic systems and control, energetics, mechanics of materials, processing, thermal science, and tribology. Professor Marshek, the consulting editor for dynamic systems and con trol, and I are pleased to present this volume of the series: Underconstrained Structural Systems by Professor Kuznetsov. The selection of this volume underscores again the interest of the Mechanical Engineering Series to pro vide our readers with topical monographs as well as graduate texts.

This Festschrift marks the retirement of Professor Chris Calladine, FRS after 42 years on the teaching staff of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. It contains a series of papers contributed by his former students, colleagues, and friends. Chris Calladine's research has ranged very widely across the field of struc tural mechanics, with a particular focus on the plastic deformation of solids and structures, and the behaviour of thin-shell structures. His insightful books on Engineering Plasticity and Theory of Shell Structures have been appreciated by many generations of students at Cambridge and elsewhere. His scientific contri bution outside engineering, in molecular structures, is at least as significant, and he is unique among engineers in having co-authored a book on DNA. Also, he has been keenly interested in the research of many students and colleagues, and on many occasions his quick grasp and physical insight have helped a student, and sometimes a colleague, find the nub of the problem without unnecessary effort. Many of the papers contained in this volume gratefully acknowledge this generous contribution. We thank Professor G. M. l. Gladwell for reading through all of the contri butions, Mrs R. Baxter and Mrs o. Constantinides for help in preparing this volume, Godfrey Argent Studio for permission to reproduce Calladine's por trait for the Royal Society, and Dr A. Schouwenburg -from Kluwer- for his assistance. Horace R. Drew Sergio Pellegrino ix CHRIS CALLADINE SOME THOUGHTS ON RESEARCH c. R.

Deployable Structures written by S. Pellegrino and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-04 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Deployable structures can vary their shape automatically from a compact, packaged configuration to an expanded, operational configuration. The first properly engineered deployable structures were used as stabilization booms on early spacecraft. Later on, more complex structures were devised for solar arrays, communication reflectors and telescopes. In other fields there have been a variety of developments, including retractable roofs for stadia, foldable components for cars, portable structures for temporary shelters and exhibition displays. Three main themes are discussed in this book: concepts, working principles, and mechanics of deployable structures, both in engineering and biology; in addition: theory of foldable bar structures and application to deployable tensegrieties; formulation of large-rotation analysis of deployable structures and finite-element simulation methods.

The IUTAM-IASS Symposium on Deployable Structures: Theory and Applications was held on 6-9 September 1998 in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. The Scientific Committee was appointed jointly by the two sponsoring organisations, the International Union for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (lASS). Its membership was as follows: S. Pellegrino (UK, Chairman) C. R. Calladine (UK) L. B. Freund (USA) M. Geradin (Belgium) Y. Hangai (Japan) K. Kawata (Japan) B. Kroplin (Germany) S. ]. Medwadowski (USA) M. M. Mikulas (USA) A. Samartin Quiroga (Spain) F. P. ]. Rimrott (Canada) T. Tarnai (Hungary) The opening lecture of the Symposium was given by Professor C. R. Calladine. It was followed by seven lecture sessions on Concepts, Structural Mechanics, Reflectors, Deployable Structures in Nature, Design and Testing, Inflatable Structures, Simulation, plus a large interactive session during which posters and physical models were shown. A discussion of topics suggested by the participants took place during the closing session. There were 83 participants from 18 countries, and a total of 50 papers were presented. Financial support was generously provided by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). Additional support was provided by the British Council, the British National Space Centre (BNSC), and Kluwer Academic Publishers. We thank the members of the Scientific Committee for their willingness to referee to a high standard both the abstracts and the papers for the proceedings. Professor G. M. L.

We are pleased to present Nonlinear Analysis of Thin-Walled Structures by James F. Doyle. Austin, Texas Frederick F. Ling Preface This book is concerned with the challenging subject of the nonlinear static, dynamic, and stability analyses of thin-walled structures. It carries on from where Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structures, published by Kluwer 1991, left off; that book concentrated on frames and linear analysis, while the present book is focused on plated structures, nonlinear analysis, and a greater emphasis on stability analysis.

Structural Synthesis In Precision Elasticity written by Yakov M Tseytlin and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-20 with Science categories.
The book consists of two main parts: structural synthesis methods for a precision elastic system, including effective approximations; and the application of precision functional elastic systems at reference and operating conditions. Each part provides theoretical basics and a large variety of examples of application and recommendations for parametric and structural optimization. A handbook as well as a textbook, it gives theoretical and practical tools to researchers, instrument system designers, engineers, metrologists, and also to students of college engineering courses. Special consideration is dedicated to the theory and applications of flexible helicoids, notch flexure hinges, and perforated plates whose methods of structural synthesis need development.

Robots, aerospace structures, active earthquake-damping devices of tall buildings, and active sound suppression are examples of the application of structural dynamics and control methods. This book addresses the structural dynamics and control problems encountered by mechanical, civil, and control engineers. Many problems presented in this book originated in recent applications in the aerospace industry, and have been solved using the approach presented here. Dynamics analysis and controller design for flexible structures require a special approach due to the large size of structural models, and because flexible structure testing and control typically requires massive instrumentation (sensors and actuators). But the rapid development of new technologies and the increased power of computers allows for the formulation and solution of engineering problems that seemed to be unapproachable not so very long ago. The modal approach was chosen in this book. It has a long tradition in structural engineering (see, e.g., [84], [87], and [26]) and is also used in control system analysis, e.g., [93]. Its usefulness, thoroughly tested, does not need extensive justification. Both structural testing and analysis give priority to the modal representation, due to its compactness, simplicity, and explicit physical interpretation. Also, many useful structural properties are properly exposed only in modal coordinates. In this book the modal approach, preferred by structural engineers, is extended into control engineering, giving new analytical results, and narrowing the gap between structural and control analysis.
