Excerpt from Underground Railroad Because few contemporary documents concerning the Underground Railroad have survived, most of the sources are autobiographical accounts written years after the events occurred. The abolitionist memoirs are based on recollections of members of a much-reviled minority writing after they had seen their cause tri umph and their years of loyal service vindicated. While they vary in authenticity, most tend to relate events from one point of view. Little or nothing was written about the ingenious and daring escape plans carried out by the fugitives themselves. The exception was The Underground Railroad written in 1872 by William Still, an African American. He published numerous docu ments, including his own interviews with fugitives who were going through Philadelphia, and focused attention on what he referred to as the self-emancipated cham pions of his race. Excerpt from The Underground Railroad From Slavery to Freedom The book is practically divided into four parts: the Rail road itself (chapters ii, v); the railroad hands (chapters iii, iv, vi); the freight (chapters vii, viii); and political relations and effects (chapters ix, x, xi). Perhaps one of the most interesting contributions to our knowledge of the subject is the account of the beginnings of the system of secret and systematic aid to fugitives. Lite evidence goes to show that there was organization in Pennsylvania before 1800 and in Ohio soon after 1815. The book thus becomes a much-needed guide to information about the obscure anti-slavery movement which preceded William Lloyd Gar rison, and to some degree prepared the way for him; and it will prove a source for the historian of the influence of the West in national development. As yet we know too little of the anti-slavery movement which so profoundly stirred the W'estern states, including Kentucky and Missouri, and which came closely into contact With the actual conditions of slavery. As Professor Siebert points out, most of the early abolitionists in the West were former slaveholders or sons of slaveholders. In no case has he given the right names of persons where their actions might be construed by their living relatives as reflecting unfavorably on their characters. The data for this work were secured by the personal experiences of the author, working with the superintendent of the Anti-Slavery League, who had charge of this work here. Also from data gathered from many persons who were connected with the work. This has never been in print before except some articles which the author used in his Pioneer History of Indiana, and which properly belong in this work. They declared that she had con tinned in his family for several years only, when certain inhabitants of Windsor, having discovered that She was an excellent servant, had induced her to leave the family by the syren songs of liberty and equality, and thereafter She had spent the vigor of her life with these people. However, when she was no longer capable of labor, they were trying to compel Mr. Jacob to maintain her. At the time that Dinah had been enticed from his service, he had not attempted by legal means to reclaim her, deciding that he could not hold her as a slave under the State constitution.
