Books on abortion (other than collections of readings) typically express and defend a particular position. This book gives both sides, as evenly and objectively as possible; it gets to the heart of each position, the core idea which animates it. It then leaves the reader to make up his or her own mind. It is an introduction to the issue, not only to the basic positions on the issue. Despite being brief, it contains careful analyses and discussions of many topics often not found at all in other works. The treatment is thorough and detailed, but succinct. Understanding Abortion: From Mixed Feelings to Rational Thought is aimed at all people who want a better understanding of what the two sides on this issue are really saying, and what reasons they give for their position. Many people assume that this issue is an interminable one, with "no clear answers"; a purely emotional debate that cannot be addressed by the use of reasoned arguments. The book shows that this is not the case.

SIDNEY CALLAHAN AND DANIEL CALLAHAN This book, like many other things to do with abortion, is a product of long controversy. Though carried out with cooperation, it was conceived in conflict. The conflict between the coeditors has per sisted for years-in fact, for at least half of their thirty-year marriage. One, Sidney, is prolife; the other, Daniel, is prochoice. Ever since the topic of abortion became of professional interest to us, in the 1960s, we have disagreed. At one time, while Daniel was writing a book on the subject, Abortion: Law, Choice and Morality (1970), we talked about the subject every day for the four years of the book's gestation. On many occasions during the 1970s, prolife articles writ ten by Sidney were passed out at Daniel's lectures in order to refute his pro choice views. Over the years, every argument, every statistic, every historical example cited in the literature has been discussed by the two of us. As Eliza Doolittle says about "words" in My Fair Lady, "There's nota one I haven't heard. " And yet we still disagree. How can it be, we ask ourselves, that intelligent people of goodwill who know all the same facts and all the same arguments still come down on different sides of the con troversy? As we well know, it is possible to agree about many things and have great love and respect for an opponent, and still differ.

Unplanned pregnancy causes dilemmas for many women and their families. Induced abortion -- the deliberate ending of a pregnancy -- is a controversial choice. In Abortion: Understanding the Debate, author Kathlyn Gay addresses this topic in a balanced fashion. She explains the history of the procedure as well as the laws and court cases regarding abortion. Gay presents the different viewpoints evenhandedly, explaining the positions of those who describe themselves as pro-life as well as those who use the term pro-choice, and she explores the possibility of common ground between the two sides. Is there a reason valid enough to have an abortion when there is no underlying medical condition? Is there punishment from God to anyone who commits or has committed abortion? Would people who have committed abortion and abortionists make heaven? The concept is one that has been debated countless times in society and churches. There are those who believe in it; the pro-choice or pro-reproductive stance, those against it; the pro-life or anti-abortionists, and those indifferent. There has never really been a striking universal view of abortion. However, in this book, we will be viewing the concept of 'abortion' from the eyes of God with reference to the bible and Christianity. 'What God says about abortion?' is not a book that is written to condemn anyone who has had an abortion or intends to, rather it seeks to expose the truth about the concept of "Abortion" and provide help for any who is having trouble over making a decision in its regard. Each page is a revelation of light and truth amplified by scriptural verses. You are certain to find your answers here. Perfect as a book gift item for seekers of the truth, kids, teenagers, mothers, fathers, parents and family members.

This collection of essays is designed to increase a reader's understanding of the facts, issues, principles, and values that should be part of any discussion regarding abortion. It is no accident that Wheaton College professors have authored the essays. After all, disseminating information is one of the tasks of a college. Along with the family, the media, and the church, they play a major role in conveying or changing the values that shape our decisions and therefore determine the nature of society itself.

Few issues facing society today are more divisive than the conflict over abortion rights. As the United States entered the decade of the 1990s, battles over abortion raged in all branches - and at all levels - of government. This comprehensive, cutting-edge volume presents a novel theoretical framework for understanding the "new" politics of abortion in a post-Webster, post-Casey era. It serves as a vessel for the most current empirical and theoretical research; as an up-to-date assessment of the controversy; as a stimulus for debate about future policy; and as a tool to teach students about abortion as a political issue. Understanding the New Politics of Abortion describes, analyzes, and interprets the subtleties of conflicting values, attitudes, and behavior. With contributions from some of the most well-established scholars in abortion politics, this volume stands as the premier resource for current information.
