Essay from the year 2023 in the subject Theology - Historic Theology, Ecclesiastical History, grade: 90, Nations University (Nations University), course: Ancient Religions, language: English, abstract: This text aims to provide an insightful examination of the relationship between Ancient Near Eastern religions and Biblical Hebrew traditions, highlighting their similarities and distinctions, particularly in the context of creation accounts. The Biblical world, in which persons and traditions are documented in the Hebrew Bible, dates from the third millennium B.C.E through the intertestamental period in Jewish literature. If Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha are to be included, the Hebrew Bible settings must finish with Persian history. The setting of the Ancient Near East, Mediterranean, and North Africa served as a historical, social, and theological backdrop from which Biblical traditions and literature arose. This paper endeavors to address presumptions related to the ancient Near East, focusing on God and man; the assessment of Ancient Near Eastern religion found in the Hebrew scriptures, by analyzing some of the important traditions, rituals, and beliefs held by those communities; and the critical points of difference between Ancient Near Eastern and Biblical Hebrew when looking at the creation accounts.

The Sources Of The Old Testament written by James Atwell and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-05-18 with Religion categories.

This book is a short introduction to the Old Testament for undergraduates, students on diocesan ministry courses, study groups and the general reader. James Atwell explains the main ideas to be found in the Old Testament in their own context, interpreting them in the light of the religion and culture of the Ancient Near East from which they emerged. One of the aspects in this world of ideas, which he draws out, and which is of particular contemporary interest, is the significance of creation and the Creator. It was this same interest that formed the broad horizon of biblical theology, which raised so many of the big questions that are grappled with in the Old Testament. These include nature and the environment, respect for creation, the distinction between Creator and creature, and human destiny. Each section ends with a number of questions to link the ideas to be found in the Old Testament to modern concerns.

Ancient Near Eastern Literature and the Hebrew Scriptures About the Fatherhood of God discusses some of the main «father-god» concepts of the people of the Ancient Near East, then examines the eighteen occurrences of God's fatherhood specifically mentioned in Hebrew Scripture. From these sources, the book develops a theology of God's fatherhood that honors both ancient and modern scrutiny. Although many studies have explored the subject of the fatherhood of God - mostly from the perspective of nonbiblical disciplines, and through the lens of Greco-Roman mythology - this book takes into account the wealth of material from the ancient Near East, the birthplace of the Hebrew Scriptures.

This volume contains essays by some of the leading scholars in the study of the Jewish religious ideas in the Second Temple period, that led up to the development of early forms of Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. Close attention is paid to the cosmological ideas to be found in the Ancient Near East and in the Hebrew Bible and to the manner in which the translators of the Hebrew Bible into Greek reflected the creativity with which Judaism engaged Hellenistic ideas about the cosmos and the creation. The concepts of heaven and divine power, human mortality, the forces of nature, combat myths, and the philosophy of wisdom, as they occur in 2 Maccabees, Ben Sira, Wisdom of Solomon and Tobit, are carefully analysed and compared with Greek and Roman world-views. There are also critical examinations of Dead Sea scroll texts, early Jewish prayers and Hebrew liturgical poetry and how they these adopt, adapt and alter earlier ideas. The editors have included appreciations of two major figures who played important roles in the study of the Second Temple period and in the history and development of the ISDCL, namely, Otto Kaiser and Alexander Di Lella, who died recently and are greatly missed by those in the field.
