“Central Europe” is a vague and ambiguous term, more to do with outlook and a state of mind than with a firmly defined geographical region. In the immediate aftermath of the collapse of the Iron Curtain, Central Europeans considered themselves to be culturally part of the West, which had been politically handicapped by the Eastern Soviet bloc. More recently, and with European Union membership, Central Europeans are increasingly thinking of themselves as politically part of the West, but culturally part of the East. This book, with contributions from a large number of scholars from the region, explores the concept of “Central Europe” and a number of other political concepts from an openly Central European perspective. It considers a wide range of issues including politics, nationalism, democracy, and the impact of culture, art and history. Overall, the book casts a great deal of light on the complex nature of “Central Europe”.

This book juxtaposes national anthems of thirteen countries from central Europe, with the aim of initiating a dialogue among the peoples of East-Central Europe. We tend to perceive a national anthem as a particular mirror, involuntarily reflecting an image of nation and homeland; but how does it represent the community for whom it sounds? To answer this question, the book deploys a comparative approach – anthems are presented in the light of those of neighbouring countries, with the conviction that one of the key features of true Europeanness is good relations between neighbours. The development trajectory of the modern nation is the context in which the book examines the history of such national symbols, alongside the symbolic content of poetry, images of the homeland and nation depicted in the anthems, as well as the sometimes longer processes which led to the adoption and legal codification of current state symbols. The Anthems of East-Central Europe will be a great resource for researchers, journalists, college and university students, politicians trying to impact emigrees from this region and emigrees themselves.

Paperback. The revival of nationalist virulence in East Central Europe has aroused the interest of numerous observers - journalists, scholars and politicians alike. Thus far, much attention has been paid to today's manifestations of nationalism in the region and to their political consequences. Vampires Unstaked, however, deals with the historic-cultural dimension of nationalism in the region. Especially since the emergence of 19th century nationalism, the manifold national character perceptions and self-images have stimulated all sorts of prejudices against ethnic communities and minorities in this part of Europe. The contributors to Vampires Unstaked not only analyze the origins, development and topical relevance of various national images, myths and stereotypes, both in as well as of East Central Europe, but also elaborate on the relationship between these mental constructs and the sphere of politics. They attempt to establish the extent to which nat

With an emphasis on nation-building, it gives the reader a better understanding of not just political history but also of the region's economic development and of everyday life. The book brings the reader right up to the present, considering contemporary issues such as the impact of the 2015 refugee crisis, migration out of Central Europe, the weakening of democratic institutions and the re-emergence of nationalism. Throughout, it offers fresh perspectives, gives agency to Central Europe, and pays attention to the ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity of the region. This is essential reading for students taking courses on Central/East-Central Europe. It is also suitable for courses on 19th and 20th Century Europe, or for anyone with an interest in the region.

National And Ethnic Stereotypes In Central And Eastern Europe written by Edwin Poppe and has been published by Purdue University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Social Science categories.

National and Ethnic Stereotypes in Central and Eastern Europe deals with intergroup relations in some Central and Eastern Europe countries after the collapse of state socialism at the end of the 1980s. More than a thousand young people in Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic were asked to attribute certain characteristics to their own national group, five fellow Central-Eastern European nationalities, three well-known Western European nationalities (German, English, Italian) and the largest ethnic minority group with a history of ethnic antagonism in their country. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, the analyses of the survey results show that stereotypes are not irrational but reflect more or less realistic differences between groups. The author examines whether social psychological and sociological theories such as social identity theory, self-categorization theory and scapegoat-theory are useful to explain and understand the content of national and ethnic stereotypes and changes in these stereotypes over time.
