"Understanding Feminism" provides an accessible guide to one of the most important and contested movements in progressive modern thought. Presenting feminism as a dynamic, multi-faceted and adaptive movement that has evolved in response to the changing practical and theoretical problems faced by women, the authors take a problem-oriented approach that maps the complex strands of feminist thinking in relation to women's struggles for equal recognition and rights, and freedom from oppressive constraints of sex, self-expression and autonomy. Each chapter focuses on a different cluster of concerns, demonstrating key moves in second-wave feminist thought, as well as some of the diversity in response-strategies that encompass both socio-economic and cultural-symbolic concerns. This approach not only shows how central feminist insights, theories and strategies emerge and re-emerge across different contexts, but makes clear that far from being 'over', feminism remains a vital response to the diverse issues that women (and men) find pressing and socially important.

Much is made about Feminism today yet little is known about the term. It is a loaded term that means different things to different people in different circumstances . It is a term that is often taken out of context, to play into a vast scope of ideologies and political interests. Generally though, feminism is widely misconstrued as only pertaining to women's rights. This, of-course should be taken with a grain of salt. In fact, the term feminism was first used by Charles Courier, a French Philosopher, in the year 1837, to explain the gap in job opportunities between men and women. Since then, feminism has been used in different countries, with different connotations, in line with their own cultures and traditions, leaving room for a great deal of head-scratching around the subject. That's why feminism is misunderstood and widely rejected by men. In this book, I aim to unpack the term in its rightful context, provide a historical background and empirical facts as well as contemporary studies, to better understand feminism as a movement, explain why it is relevant today and why should men be feminist. But first, it's important to start with the basics.Feminism at its core, is the equality of sexes. Nothing more. Nothing less. It doesn't mean women are superior to men. It doesn't mean only women's voices are amplified. It doesn't mean footing the bill on a date. It doesn't mean men will loose out of power, influence, and authority. It doesn't mean there will be a negative shifts in relationships, marriages, and cultures It's a word that represents a movement which advocates for equal rights of all gender identities. So if it that simple, why is feminism misunderstood? Some points to a bad branding. Some say it's because feminism has lived its times. Others reckoned that it's because it has been weaponised to pander to the grieving narratives of the voiceless and the less fortunate. Each one of these arguments deserve a fair amount of consideration, at least for the sake of an evidence-based debate.Taking on issues such as Masculinity, Patriarchy, Sexism, Misogyny, Manoshphere and Rape, I argue that we often get stuck in semantics, that feminism is the way to go for women's rights but it's also the answer and solution to men's issues and concerns. While the word does include fem, it doesn't pertain to women's rights only, much like Man-kind doesn't mean the existence of men only.

The male/female dichotomy is not obvious, and the feminist “we” is far from self-evident; its definition changes according to currents and ideologies. As well as fighting male domination, feminism can also defend different expressions of gender and sexuality. By examining the ideas defended by the different currents and how they fit into the social landscape, this book clarifies the direction in which they must unite if feminism is to remain a historically fertile movement. Marie-Hélène Bourcier is a lecturer at the University of Lille III, where she teaches cultural studies, feminist theory and queer theory. Her previous publications include the Queer Zones trilogy. Alice Moliner dite Labaz works for the press, publishing and communications. She has also illustrated La Femme est-elle soluble dans l’eau de vaisselle? by Anne Larue (Chiflet & Cie, 2008) and a campaign for UNICEF.

MeToo movement, gender pay gap, manspreading, catcalling - you hear these terms more and more often these days, and they all revolve around one topic: feminism. Feminism affects us all and a sound basic knowledge of the subject is essential, especially at the moment. In this book, you will learn what all these terms mean and how they relate to feminism. But what exactly is feminism? Haven't we all had equal rights for a long time? In which areas is feminism necessary? Does feminism also help men? And what can I do for feminism? These questions are answered in this book. Once you understand how sexism works, how it manifests itself and how feminism can help combat it, you too can contribute to creating a modern world without gender discrimination.

Feminist approaches within the social sciences have expanded enormously since the 1960s. In addition, in recent years, geographic perspectives have become increasingly significant as feminist recognition of the differences between women, their diverse experiences in different parts of the world and the importance of location in the social construction of knowledge has placed varied geographies at the centre of contemporary feminist and postmodern debates. Gender, Identity and Place is an accessible and clearly written introduction to the wide field of issues that have been addressed by geographers and feminist scholars. It combines the careful definition and discussion of key concepts and theoretical approaches with a wealth of empirical detail from a wide-ranging selection of case studies and other empirical research. It is organized on the basis of spatial scale, examining the relationships between gender and place from the body to the nation, although the links between different spatial scales are also emphasized. The conceptual division and spatial separation between the public and private spheres and their association with men and women respectively has been a crucial part of the social construction of gendered differences and its establishment, maintenance and reshaping from industrial urbanization to the end of the millennium is a central linking theme in the eight substantive chapters. The book concludes with an assessment of the possibilities of doing feminist research. It will be essential reading for students in geography, feminist theory, women's studies, anthropology and sociology.
