For decades and in the interests of greater flight safety, Competence criteria have been introduced in professional training. The results obtained in professional aviation are indisputable and the proposed new paradigm aims to increase the pilot's ability to resolve, in particular, unfamiliar situations. There is no doubt that during soaring, the conditions faced are, as a general rule, highly variable, which requires the pilot to be highly adaptable. However, even though this flying technique is the one that requires the most resilience, there is no single criterion in the development of training that would lead the future pilot to develop the necessary skills, nor is there a single evaluation criterion that would determine a common standard. From my experience in professional teaching in organisations such as CAE, the experience as an EASA inspector and my own experience as a gliding instructor I wanted to propose a new way of teaching and, above all, of assessing a future glider pilot with COMPETENCE criteria in which the elements of CRM and TEM are always present together with the application of KSA. In this text I hope that gliding instructors will find a tool for teaching their classes and a greater standardisation as a guide to develop their own Competence Based Training and assessment adapted at the local conditions and gliders. The future is not white or black but an infinite scale of greys where different solution could be proposed successfully. By this the list of mission proposed is my personal view adapted to my programs but it not pretends to be an absolute criterion. Hope you will enjoy Happy landings! Francesco Padovano

Glider Origins written by Isaac Berners-Lee and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.

""Glider Origins"" offers a captivating journey through the evolution of unpowered flight, from ancient dreams to modern engineering marvels. Beginning with Otto Lilienthal's groundbreaking controlled flights in 1891, the book weaves together the technical foundations of aerodynamics with the compelling stories of aviation pioneers who dared to challenge gravity. Through meticulous research drawing from primary sources and engineering archives, readers discover how early glider experiments laid the essential groundwork for all modern aviation. The narrative progresses chronologically, exploring three key aspects: the fundamental engineering principles of unpowered flight, the visionary inventors who advanced glider technology, and the transformation of gliding from experimental science to recreational pursuit. Particularly fascinating is the examination of how German gliding movements of the 1920s and 1930s, along with wartime necessity, drove significant technological innovations in aircraft design. The book expertly balances technical content with accessibility, explaining complex concepts like lift, drag, and thermal dynamics through clear examples and practical applications. What sets this work apart is its comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, connecting glider development to meteorology, materials science, and physics. The book explores both civilian and military applications, from training pilots to conducting atmospheric research, while maintaining a focus on the engineering principles that make unpowered flight possible. For mechanical engineers, aviation enthusiasts, and students alike, it serves as both a technical reference and a testament to human ingenuity in the quest for flight.

DIATOM GLIDING MOTILITY Moving photosynthetic organisms are still a great mystery for biologists and this book summarizes what is known and reports the current understanding and modeling of those complex processes. The book covers a broad range of work describing our current state of understanding on the topic, including: historic knowledge and misconceptions of motility; evolution of diatom motility; diatom ecology & physiology; cell biology and biochemistry of diatom motility, anatomy of motile diatoms; observations of diatom motile behavior; diatom competitive ability, unique forms of diatom motility as found in the genus Eunotia; and models of motility. This is the first book attempting to gather such information surrounding diatom motility into one volume focusing on this single topic. Readers will be able to gather both the current state of understanding on the potential mechanisms and ecological regulators of motility, as well as possible models and approaches used to help determine how diatoms accomplish such varied behaviors as diurnal movements, accumulation into areas of light, niche partitioning to increase species success. Given the fact that diatoms remain one of the most ecologically crucial cells in aquatic ecosystems, we hope that this volume will act as a springboard towards future research into diatom motility and even better resolution of some of the issues in motility. Audience Diatomists, phycologists, aquatic ecologists, cellular physiologists, environmental biologists, biophysicists, diatom nanotechnologists, algal ecologists, taxonomists.
