Julia Kristeva has revolutionized the study of modernism by developing a theoretical approach that is uniquely attuned to the dynamic interplay between, on the one hand, linguistic and formal experimentation, and, on the other hand, subjective crisis and socio-political upheaval. Inspired by the contestatory spirit of the late 1960s in which she emerged as a theorist, Kristeva has defended the project of the European avant-gardes and has systematically attempted to reclaim their legacy in the new societal structures produced by a global, spectacle-dominated capitalism. This edited volume aims to reposition intertextuality in relation to recent trends in critical practice. Inspired by the work of Sara Ahmed in particular, our authors explore and reconfigure classic theories of authorship, influence and the text (including those by Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault and Harold Bloom), updating these conversations to include intersectionality specifically, broadly understood to include gendered, racial and other forms of social justice including disability, and the progressive impact of the transmission and transformation of texts. This diverse volume includes discussions of major canonical works such as James Joyce’s Ulysses alongside the recent contemporary literature by authors such as Siri Husvedt and Maggie O’Farrell, as well as theoretical interventions. This book makes an argument critical to literary theory and sexuality in 2022. It argues that Colette’s fiction portrays a woman struggling to live in the throes of the incest taboo, understood in its psychological implications for power relations both private and public, then and now. Informed by Julia Kristeva’s work, it approaches Colette’s writing and its translation along with two films via close, psychoanalytic readings. It demonstrates that this version of Kristeva’s psychoanalytic theory, in an accessible form and with emphasis on the psychology of women and social transformation, helps to read Colette for the twenty-first century as well as to show how Kristeva’s theory works. This volume examines especially Colette’s most admired novels, especially from the second half of her life, including the much misunderstood La Maison de Claudine (1922), where the incest taboo surfaces in the relationship of the narrator with the mother. The taboo had appeared two years earlier in Chéri (1920), in the rapport between the maternal Léa, a woman of a certain age, and the young man, Chéri; finally, in Gigi, the incest taboo characterises the relations between the young teenager of the eponymous title and her much older, uncle figure Gaston.

At a time when education is routinely – and problematically – translated into the discourse of learning and teaching to serve a series of instrumental imperatives, the question of what we mean by education is raised with renewed urgency. This book looks beyond present horizons to imagine education anew. It considers ways of theorising education that acknowledge the complexity of its genealogy, empirical practice, and imbrication within regimes of governance, in the light of education’s orientation to both the already actualised and the new and unprecedented. A specifically educational milieu is characterised by the kinds of existential movements and negotiations to which this gives rise, together with a language and grammar for their articulation, that points to their urgency and significance. A poetics of education – an edupoetics – is thus a considered response to this exigency.Through engaging a variety of felicitous tropes – that include the sea and its navigation (Serres), opacity (Glissant), desire (ʿAṭṭār), precarity (Butler), gift (Manning), and chiasma (Merleau-Ponty), it becomes possible to articulate an educational image of thinking that, in welcoming the new and unforeseen, promotes a radical hospitality to difference. The chapters engage a variety of writers to explore how an edupoetics might intersect with a series of specific educational scenes and concerns that include, for example, the qualities of ‘good’ research that opens to the other-than-human, the complexities of doctoral supervision, the pedagogics of gender, and the gift of neurodiversity. This book articulates an alternative educational imaginary – an edupoetics – that gestures towards collectivities gathered around matters of intense concern. It will be relevant to scholars in the humanities and social sciences interested in educational theory and the philosophy of education.
