With Russia and the U.S. currently having 1,700 nuclear weapons pointed at each other on hair trigger alert, our relationship with Russia is one of the most critical, requiring a rational policy. But in order to conduct a rational foreign policy, we must understand the other country's point of view and what has shaped it - including it's history, culture and geography. That doesn't mean one must agree with Russia, but we must know how Russia perceives its own interests so we can determine what they may be willing to risk or sacrifice on behalf of those perceived interests and where there might be areas of cooperation. The American media generally has a very poor track record in providing this crucial service with respect to many of the nations with whom we've already gone to war. The so-called experts they consult often have conflicts of interest, nefarious agendas, and lack an objective understanding of the nation they are speaking about. This has certainly been the case when it comes to reporting on Russia, a country with which the stakes are potentially much higher. This book is an antidote to the malpractice of much of the American media when it comes to understanding the Russian point of view and formulating a reasoned policy toward the world's other nuclear superpower.

The exceptionally wide gulf between rulers and ruled that characterises Russia was created when the Vikings conquered the Slavs in the ninth century. This was consolidated when an elite of Viking descent forced Orthodox baptism on the Slavs, and later imposed Byzantine ideology. In its attempt to foster its own political and economic models in Russia the West committed a blunder. A study of opinion polls found that Russians now want a blend of tsarism, communism and Stalinism. Understanding Russian Strategic Behavior written by Graeme P. Herd and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-27 with History categories.

This book examines the extent to which Russia’s strategic behavior is the product of its imperial strategic culture and Putin’s own operational code. The work argues that, by conflating personalistic regime survival with national security, Putin ensures that contemporary Russian national interest, as expressed through strategic behavior, is the synthesis of a peculiar troika: a long-standing imperial strategic culture, rooted in a partially imagined past; the operational code of a counter-intelligence president and decision-making elite; and the realities of Russia as a hybrid state. The book first examines the role of structure and agency in shaping contemporary Russian strategic behavior. It then provides a conceptual understanding of strategic culture, and applies this to Tsarist and Soviet historical developments. The book’s analysis of the operational code, however, demonstrates that Putinism is more than the sum of the past. At the end, the book assesses Putin’s statecraft and stress-tests our assumptions about the exercise of contemporary power in Russia and the structure of Putin’s agency. This book will be of interest to students of Russian politics and foreign policy, strategic studies and international relations.
