How does the Council of Europe put into practice its commitment to the promotion of a culture of democracy through education? Over the past decade or so, our societies have been facing increasing difficulties in reconciling acceptance of diversity and social inclusion with the need for community. Social cohesion is one of the declared objectives of the European Union and, with some 16% of EU citizens at risk of poverty, the need to fight poverty and social exclusion continues as a major challenge. The EU has not made any progress towards achieving its 'Europe 2020' social inclusion target, adopted in 2010, of lifting at least 20 million people from poverty and social exclusion by 2020. This book aims to contribute to our understanding of some of the substantive challenges facing ‘Social Europe’ and to the development of methods that can bring about new insights into issues related to income, deprivation and work.
