In recent years there has been growing concern over the pervasive disparities in academic achievement that are highly influenced by ethnicity, class and gender. Specifically, within the neoliberal policy rhetoric, there has been concern over underachievement of working-class young males, specifically white working-class boys. The historic persistence of this pattern, and the ominous implication of these trends on the long-term life chances of white working-class boys, has led to a growing chorus that something must be done to intervene. This book provides an in-depth sociological study exploring the subjectivities within the neoliberal ideology of the school environment, in order to expand our understanding of white working-class disengagement with education. The chapters discuss how white working-class boys in three educational sites enact social and learner identities, focusing on the practices of 'meaning-making' and 'identity work' that the boys experienced, and the disjunctures and commonalities between them. The book presents an analysis of the varying tensions influencing the identity of each boy and the consequences of these pressures on their engagement with education. This thesis investigates how white working-class boys experience social and learner identities in three educational sites. It presents the findings of an in-depth sociological study of teenage boys from one locality in South London, focusing on the practices of 'meaning-making' and 'identity work,' the boys' experience and the various disjunctures and commonalities between the social and learner identities. Working-class boys are often presented in homogeneous terms and this study explores the heterogeneity of being a working-class boy and the diversity of their experiences in education. The work is positioned within the debates regarding masculinity in schooling and working-class disadvantage; my focus is on how boys' 'lifeworlds' are created in contrast and in relation to their schooling experience. How boys contend with neoliberal educational processes which are fundamentally about "continually changing the self, making informed choices, engaging in competition, and taking chances" (Phoenix 2004: 229) and the construction of what I call 'egalitarianism' was an important homogenous feature in the data. The methodological approach employed is integral to gaining this understanding. I draw on Bourdieu's signature concepts and theoretical framework in order to understand the complexities and negotiations surrounding reconciling educational success with working-class values. To further my understanding, I also utilise elements of intersectionality questioning, in order to address the interplay between class, gender and ethnicity in the social and learner identities the boys constitute and reconstitute through the various discursive practices in which they participate.

What are Black middle-class parents’ strategies for supporting their children through school? What role do the educational histories of Black middle-class parents play in their decision-making about their children’s education? There is now an extensive body of research on the educational strategies of the white middle classes but a silence exists around the emergence of the Black middle classes and their experiences, priorities, and actions in relation to education. This book focuses on middle-class families of Black Caribbean heritage. Drawing on rich qualitative data from nearly 80 in-depth interviews with Black Caribbean middle-class parents, the internationally renowned contributors reveal how these parents attempt to navigate their children successfully through the school system, and defend them against low expectations and other manifestations of discrimination. Chapters identify when, how and to what extent parents deploy the financial, cultural and social resources available to them as professional, middle class individuals in support of their children’s academic success and emotional well-being. The book sheds light on the complex, and relatively neglected relations, between race, social class and education, and in addition, poses wider questions about the experiences of social mobility, and the intersection of race and class in forming the identity of the parents and their children. This study critically explores contemporary African/Caribbean boys’ (15–16 years old) educational experiences in the UK. It focuses on their lives from both within and outside the school. Various research methods are employed in order to gain a comprehensive picture that includes the accounts of African/Caribbean boys, parents, teachers and youth workers. The study explores both the boys’ positive and negative experiences of school life. At one level, the boys’ narratives suggest ‘a nothing but the same old story’ of racial exclusion and subordination within urban secondary schools. At another level, we hear of the importance of education in their lives. Of particular significance is the evidence of how black supplementary schools and youth organisations are providing an educational space that positively supports them in their transition into adulthood. The study makes recommendations for educationalists and policy makers based on the findings. This includes the need to understand the boys’ experiences of racial exclusion and the complexities around the intersection of race, gender and class for a younger generation at the start of the twenty-first century. In comparing mainstream and supplementary educational spaces, the boys identify the need to build an inclusive mainstream curriculum that represents the historical past and cultural present of their lives. Importantly, the study vividly highlights contrasting teacher-pupil interactions between these two educational spaces, suggesting what the former can learn from the latter.
