Watch the presentation video @ https: //MusicBusinessMystery.com It may surprise you to learn that most people who claim they are in the music business (i.e., managers, agents, scouts, etc.) are not. As a matter of fact, they really don't even know what the music business is. At least, not exactly. Even worse, the aspiring recording artist knows even less. This being the case, the aspiring recording artist is not equipped to recognize the dangers of pretend sharks that fester around the music business. Actually, sharks run the music business. But this is not the problem. At least not the immediate one. The main problem the aspiring recording artist will encounter is the myriad of sharks that pretend they are in the music business. The main difference between the real sharks and the pretend sharks is that you can make legitimate record deals with the real sharks. The pretenders are on the front lines, patiently waiting to take advantage of unsuspecting naïve starry-eyed dreamers. Unfortunately, most aspiring recording artists are so attracted to the pursuit of fame and fortune that they completely neglect the business side of the music business. And they are easy targets for pretend sharks to trick into wasting valuable time and money that lead to nowhere. Granted, plenty of one hit wonders have come and gone over the decades leaving a false impression of how to make it. The real sharks who run the music business are businessmen who control all those lucrative record deals; and they operate in a certain format. Unfortunately, the aspiring recording artist has no idea what that format is. And neither do those pretend sharks who only serve to waste your time and money. THE ONLY WAY for the aspiring recording artist to make it in the music business is to first understand what exactly the music business is and how it works. This alone is enough information to help you instantly recognize and avoid all the pretend sharks. And second, understand the format of how the businessmen who run the music business operate. Aspiring recording artists who don't follow the proper music business format at most will become a one hit wonder. But those who do follow the proper music business format are offered the most lucrative record deals. Every aspiring recording artist should arm themselves with this crucial information.

Business schools are placing more emphasis on the role of business in society. Top business school accreditors are shifting to mandating that schools teach their students about the social impact of business, including AACSB standards to require the incorporation of business impact on society into all elements of accredited institutions. Researchers are also increasingly focused on issues related to sustainability, but in particular to business and peace as a field. A strong strain of scholarship argues that ethics is nurtured by emotions and through aesthetic quests for moral excellence. The arts (and music as shown specifically in this book) can be a resource to nudge positive emotions in the direction toward ethical behavior and, logically, then toward peace. Business provides a model for positive interactions that not only foster long-term successful business but also incrementally influences society. This book provides an opportunity for integration and recognition of how music (and other art forms) can further encourage business toward the direction of peace while business provides a platform for the dissemination and modeling of the positive capabilities of music toward the aims of peace in the world today. The primary market for this book is the academic audience. Unlike many other academic books, however, the interdisciplinary nature of the book allows for multiple academic audiences. Thus, this book reaches into schools of music, business, political science, film studies, sports and society studies, the humanities, ethics and, of course, peace studies.

Covering the oldest forms of human music making to the newest, this chronology presents music from a global rather than a Eurocentric perspective. Each of 60 "gateways" addresses a particular genre, style, or period of music. Every gateway opens with a guided listening example that unlocks a world of music through careful study of its structural elements. How did the piece come to be composed or performed? How did it respond to the social and cultural issues at the time, and what does that music mean today? Students learn to listen to, explain, understand, and ultimately value all the music they encounter in their world. New to this edition is a broader selection of musical examples that reflect the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion advocated by North American universities. Eight gateways have been replaced. A timeline of gateways helps students see the book’s historical narrative at a glance. Features Values orientation—Diverse, equitable, and inclusive approach to music history. All genres of music—Presents all music as worthy of study, including classical, world, popular, and jazz. Global scope within a historical narrative—Begins with small-scale forager societies up to the present, with a shifting focus from global to European to American influences. Recurring themes — Aesthetics, emotion, social life, links to culture, politics, economics, and technology. Modular framework—60 gateways—each with a listening example—allow flexibility to organize chronologically or by the seven themes. Consistent structure—With the same step-by-step format, students learn through repeated practice how to listen and how to think about music. Anthology of scores—For those courses that use the textbook in a music history sequence. Gateways to Understanding Music continues to employ a website to host the audio examples and instructor’s resources.
