The start of the 21st century has marked an incredible change in the world of Energy. In fact, in a world which is more uncertain than ever (sudden changes in energy prices, shale and oil gas, emergence of new players, geopolitical tensions in Ukraine, Iraq, etc), the only real issue in which there is a general consensus remains that of Energy Savings and Energy Efficiency. This book aims to build a general picture of the world of modern energy by focusing on the major climatic and geopolitical challenges. It also explores the most recent developments in environmental regulations, notably those related to Energy Efficiency and Energy Savings, seen without any doubt as the founding roots of the so-called Energy Transition. According to Myriam Maestroni, a leading expert on Energy in France and Europe, these two pillars of the “New World of Energy 2.0”» can be broken down at international, European, national and local levels, not only because of the changes in the rules and the perceptions of policy-makers regarding energy efficiency, but also, and especially because of the concrete ground level realities, public, entrepreneurial, local or associative initiatives and technological innovations. The book, written in close cooperation with two top experts in the global energy world, Michel Derdevet and Jean-Marie Chevalier- also records the opinions of some of the best French and international leading figures who are highly engaged to contribute through their proposals, analysis and actions, to the emergence of the new world of «Energy 2.0», amongst which Bruno Lechevin, Fatih Birol, Johannes Meier, Marc Beckers, Ann Robinson, Stephen Howard, Juliet Davenport, Gregor Paterson-Jones, Jean Marie Chevalier, Robert Bell, Michèle Sabban, Corine Lepage, Gabriele Albertini, Jeremy Rifkin, etc.

Activists, scientists and policymakers around the world have long argued that we need to find sustainable and secure solutions to the world's energy demands. At issue for citizens worldwide is whether we are scientifically literate enough to understand the potential policy choices before us. Understanding Energy and Energy Policy is a one-stop resource for understanding the complexities of energy policy and the science behind the utilization of energy sources. The multidisciplinary perspective presented in this book is necessary for readers to be able to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of potential energy policies. The book draws on case studies from the global North and South, from countries that are resource poor and resource rich, while providing explanations of the science and politics behind burning fossil fuels, and power created through nuclear energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, biofuels and water.

In 1977, at the Xth World Energy Conference in Istanbul, the Conservation Commission presented an initial global study of future trends in energy supply and demand up to 2020. This pioneering work was the origin of large scale global energy surveys. At the Munich Conference of 1980, the Commission made more thorough analyses by concentrating particularly on the specific behaviour of Third World Nations. Today, in New Delhi, in keeping with the tradition established by its previous surveys, the Commission is developing a new global study, the originality of which lies in the procedure adopted in its production. Rejecting centralised forecasting models which have almost exclusively dominated the minds of researchers, the Commission recommended a decen tralised method of approach which was totally different both in its basic principles and in its implementation. Essentially, the inhabitants of the regions were to be given the opportunity of expressing their own views on their energy future, rather than imposing on them an external model and therefore external results.

This book provides a historical background for the world's current energy problems, describing how the Industrial Revolution has led us to the impending end of the "Age of Fossil Fuels," and describes possible solutions for averting a global crisis. World Energy Crisis: A Reference Handbook provides a thorough investigation of a controversial topic: our current global energy situation, and what actions should be taken to prevent a crippling fuel-supply catastrophe in the future. The book presents a historical background for current energy problems that discusses the supply and consumption of various forms of energy at different periods of history, covering the evolution of energy use in civilization beginning with human muscle power, the successive eras of mechanized industry and transportation, and our current dependence on fossil fuels. The author explains geopolitical factors regarding energy; details controversial new ways of extending the fossil fuel supply, including the exploitation of tar sands and oil shale as well as new technologies like hydraulic fracturing; and examines the various environmental concerns that are integral to extracting energy from natural resources—and the results of consuming them.

This book presents the results of a study of long-term perspectives for energy development of the world and its main regions, performed at the Siberian Energy Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Energy Systems Institute since 1998). The methodological approach, the 10-regional Global Energy Model (GEM-10R) of the world energy system, energy demand forecasts, data on energy resources and energy technologies, and results of calculations based on mathematical models are described. Particular attention is given to determination of energy requirements and peculiarities of its technological structure that are caused by mankind's necessary transition to sustainable development. Economic and ecological consequences of constraints on greenhouse gas emissions and scales of nuclear energy production, as well as assistance of developed countries to developing ones are investigated. Problems of cheap oil, gas and uranium resources depletion, fuel price growth, synthetic fuel production and new energy technology implementation are analysed. The book is intended for specialists in energy and economics, as well as students and postgraduate students of technical high schools and universities. ac
