The body is increasingly understood as being at the centre of colonial and post-colonial relationships and textual productions. Creating and circulating images of the undisciplined body of the 'other' was and is a critical aspect of colonialism. Likewise, resistance to colonial practices was also frequently corporeal, with indigenous peoples appropriating, parodying, and subverting those European practices which were used to signify the 'civilized' status of the colonizing body. The Body in the Library reads representations of the corporeal in texts of empire; case studies include: • gendered representations of corporeality • medical régimes • ethnography and photography in the Pacific • cultural transvestism in theatre • disease and colonial knowledge generation • 'freak shows' and colonial exhibits • cinematic representations of bodies • geography and the metaphorization of land as a penetrable body • marketing the body • organ transplants and the limits of the post-colonial paradigm In viewing colonialism and resistance as a bodily phenomenon, The Body in the Library enables new perspectives on the process of colonization and resistance. It is an important resource for teachers and students of colonial and post-colonial literatures.

This memoir by a leading Australian playwright casts a shrewd eye over Australian culture and politics. Michael Gurr has written, directed and acted. He's also been a political activist, for causes such as asylum seekers in Australia. He's worked with the Australian Labor Party as a speech writer. He has won a number of awards, including four state Literary Awards for Drama. The diary meshes the personal with the politicalandmdash;from the Dismissal in 1975, through the rise of economic rationalism, net culture, and globalisation to the transformed Australia of 2006. As a playwright and activist, Michael Gurr has been a close observer of Australian politics and culture for more than twenty years. Days Like These is his personal account of a writer's evolution against the backdrop of a changing nation: a clear-eyed, often darkly humorous riff on how the times have come to be out of joint. Michael Gurr is the recipient of four State Literary Awards for Drama in NSW and Victoria. His work has been produced Australia-wide and in the UK and the USA. He was speechwriter for Steve Bracks in the campaign that returned the ALP to power in Victoria in 1999.

I was born in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. My dad was a freedom fighter, waging war for an independent state: South Sudan. We lived in a small country town, in the deep south of Western Australia. I never knew black people could be Muslim until I met my North African friends. My mum and my dad courted illegally under the Apartheid regime. My first impression of Australia was a housing commission in the north of Tasmania. Somalis use this term, “Dhaqan Celis”. “Dhaqan” means culture and “Celis” means return. Learning to kick a football in a suburban schoolyard. Finding your feet as a young black dancer. Discovering your grandfather’s poetry. Meeting Nelson Mandela at your local church. Facing racism from those who should protect you. Dreading a visit to the hairdresser. House- hopping across the suburbs. Being too black. Not being black enough. Singing to find your soul, and then losing yourself again. Welcome to African Australia. Compiled by award-winning author Maxine Beneba Clarke, with curatorial assistance from writers Ahmed Yussuf and Magan Magan, this anthology brings together voices from the regions of Africa and the African diaspora, including the Caribbean and the Americas. Told with passion, power and poise, these are the stories of African-diaspora Australians. Contributors include Faustina Agolley, Santilla Chingaipe, Carly Findlay, Khalid Warsame, Nyadol Nyuon, Tariro Mavondo and many, many more. ‘A deeply moving and unforgettable read – there is something to learn from each page. FOUR AND A HALF STARS’ —Books+Publishing ‘A complex tapestry of stories specific in every thread and illuminating as a whole ... The wonderful strength of this anthology lies in the easily understood and the never imagined.’ —Readings ‘In the face of structural barriers to health care, education, housing and employment, the narratives in Growing Up African are tempered with stories of deep courage, hope, resilience and endurance.’ —The Conversation ‘Growing Up African in Australia is almost painfully timely. It speaks to the richness of a diaspora that is all too often deprived of its nuances ... Lively, moving, and often deeply affecting, it is an absolute must-read. FOUR AND A HALF STARS’ —The AU Review

A powerful and evocative work from the pen of one of Australia's most celebrated writers, the play resonates strongly with a nation debating the truth behind its historical legacies and the ever-pressing issue of reconciliation with its indigenous peoples.

Belonging written by John McCallum and has been published by Currency Press Pty Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Drama categories.

John McCallum's new history explores the relationship between 20th century Australian drama and a developing concept of nation. The book focuses on the creative tension sparked by dueling impulses between nationalism and cosmopolitanism; and between artistic seriousness and larrikin populism. It explores issues such as the domineering influence of European high culture, the ongoing popularity of representational realism, the influence of popular theatrical forms, the ambivalence (between affection and aggression) of much Australian humour and satire, and the interaction between the personal and the political in drama. The strength of "Belonging" is its comprehensiveness, anyone studying an Australian play will find an account of it here in the context of the other works by its author or the time and place in which it was written. As well as a rundown of the major writers and their works, and an account of how the minor writers fitted in, the book also investigates the more obscure plays and writers about whom little has been written. This authoritative study of Australian drama gives an account of the relationship between our theatre and our sense of self while taking into account a broad range of influences that helped to shape both.

Jerusalem is about building a better world. Vivien Rickman convenes a volunteer group of prison visitors. Cameron Rickman is a member of the parliamentary Labour Party. Each strives to create a new and better society. Oliver Rickman is their son. He travels. They each begin to question their ideals and by looking inwardly to discover that perhaps the new world needs to be created from within the self. A searching play, by one of our more forward thinking and socially astute playwrights, Jerusalem generates a deep sense of questioning about the world in which we find ourselves and the power within each of us to change it (2 acts, 3 men, 3 women).

In the late 1960s, new theatre companies who had a passion for Australianess, were created in opposition to stuffy, mostly imported theatre of no relevance to themselves. This work gives insights on how the new drama explored Australian themes and issues, in a theatre where the playwright had pride of place.
