Sacred Kingship In World History written by A. Azfar Moin and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-10 with History categories.

Sacred kingship has been the core political form, in small-scale societies and in vast empires, for much of world history. This collaborative and interdisciplinary book recasts the relationship between religion and politics by exploring this institution in long-term and global comparative perspective. Editors A. Azfar Moin and Alan Strathern present a theoretical framework for understanding sacred kingship, which leading scholars reflect on and respond to in a series of essays. They distinguish between two separate but complementary religious tendencies, immanentism and transcendentalism, which mold kings into divinized or righteous rulers, respectively. Whereas immanence demands priestly and cosmic rites from kings to sustain the flourishing of life, transcendence turns the focus to salvation and subordinates rulers to higher ethical objectives. Secular modernity does not end the struggle between immanence and transcendence—flourishing and righteousness—but only displaces it from kings onto nations and individuals. After an essay by Marshall Sahlins that ranges from the Pacific to the Arctic, the book contains chapters on religion and kingship in settings as far-flung as ancient Egypt, classical Greece, medieval Islam, Mughal India, modern European drama, and ISIS. Sacred Kingship in World History sheds new light on how religion has constructed rulership, with implications spanning global history, religious studies, political theory, and anthropology.

Argues that the Holocaust has caused a mutation of the world. Our new world is Planet Auschwitz, an unworld with satellites separate and incommunicable. In this new world, the forces of nihilism are at work - e.g. terrorism, mass murder. Face-to-face with this destruction process, its administrators, and its survivors, we mutations must rewrite everything that has been projectively written about us in the old world. The tendency to repression keeps us from thinking, binding us to cynicism and nostalgia. The response to this new world condition must be to remember the Holocaust - repression leads to indifference and destruction.

Conversion Identity And Power written by A. Sue Russell and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Religion categories.

The introduction of Christianity into traditional societies has been the subject of numerous studies. Few of these studies, however, have adequately examined the way that this introduction affects power relationships in a community. In this, the third volume in the American Society of Missiology's dissertation series, A. Sue Russell attempts to advance the discourse on Christianity and social change by showing how a new social institution, the local church, both influences and is influenced by existing sociocultural power relationships. Building on her extensive research into the Tagal Murut, Dr. Russell clearly demonstrates that the introduction of Christianity created a dynamic that produced new social relations and power structures in Tagal society. With its unique insights into this crucial dynamic, Conversion, Identity, and Power stands as an important contribution to the sociological and missiological literature exploring the impact of Christianity on traditional societies. This study contextualizes magical realism within current debates and theories of postcoloniality and examines the fiction of three of its West African pioneers: Syl Cheney-Coker of Sierra Leone, Ben Okri of Nigeria and Kojo Laing of Ghana. Brenda Cooper explores the distinct elements of the genre in a West African context, and in relation to: * a range of global expressions of magical realism, from the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez to that of Salman Rushdie * wider contemporary trends in African writing, with particular attention to how the realism of authors such as Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka has been connected with nationalist agendas. This is a fascinating and important work for all those working on African literature, magical realism, or postcoloniality.
