In this fourth edition, the content has been refined and a test item file has been added. Fleras has included a new chapter on gender, without sacrificing the gender dimension in each of the chapters. The material in this text has been updated to keep it fresh and the concepts of multiculturalism, multicultural citizenship, and human rights continue to be reassessed in light of national and international developments. Each chapter opens with a "Debate Box" that sets the tone for the chapter and concludes with "Debate Revisited" box that draws inferences from the preceding debate. Many of the case studies have been revamped to incorporate a debate format. The "pro" and "con" approach is intended to engage readers in grappling with the issues that reflect different life experiences.

Power And Inequality In Interpersonal Relations written by Eric Beasley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-08 with Psychology categories.

This book explores interpersonal situations in which weak or vulnerable people find themselves and the ways in which others help create, sustain, and eradicate such social dynamics. Vladimir Shlapentokh and Eric Beasley demonstrate that people can gain power over each other and then abuse this power because of unequal resource conditions. The authors define resources as the means necessary for satisfaction or achievement of needs or goals, such as wealth, physical strength, intellectual capacity and information, sexual attractiveness, and status. This volume is different from existing social science books on inequality and vulnerability, which address relations between people of different social positions, races, genders, ages, and places of residence confronting each other in political, economic, and cultural battles. This book focuses on people who become the victims of those whom they know personally-relatives, colleagues, neighbors. The authors argue that unequal resource distribution among members of social units is the main cause of conflict and ultimately creates situations where members of a social unit can abuse other members of the same unit.

In 1889 the Brazilian empire was overthrown in a military coup. The goodwill and assistance of the United States to the young republic of Brazil helped forge an alliance. But America's apparently irresistible political and economic advances into Brazil were also hampered by disagreements-over naval armaments, reciprocity arrangements, the issue of coffee valorization, and in the 1920s over Brazil's efforts to play an active role in the League of Nations at Geneva. The relationship proved to be unequal, with the United States gaining influence in Latin America, as the Brazilian elite's ambitions and vanities were fed.
