Minefields is a compelling exploration of a foreign correspondent's life - proof of Hugh's belief that 'if you go looking for trouble, you'll probably find it'. Over nearly forty years as a journalist and foreign correspondent, Hugh Riminton has been shot at, blown up, threatened with deportation and thrown in jail. He has reported from nearly fifty countries, witnessed massacres in Africa, wars and conflicts on four continents, and every kind of natural disaster. It has been an extraordinary life. From a small-town teenager with a drinking problem, cleaning rat cages for a living, to a multi-award-winning international journalist reporting to an audience of 300 million people, Hugh has been a frontline witness to our times. From genocide in Africa to the Indian Ocean tsunami, from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to slave-buying in Sudan, Hugh has seen the best and worst of human behaviour. In Australia, he has covered political dramas, witnessed the Port Arthur massacre and the Thredbo disaster and broken a major national scandal. His work helped force half a dozen government inquiries. His story is entertaining, deeply personal and quietly wise. 'An impressive career. His story is a triumph of substance over style.' Sydney Morning Herald 'Hugh is an icon of Australian journalism' Michael Ware, former Iraq correspondent for TIME and CNN

Left behind by his fleeing family, Alfie is separated from all he holds dear. He sets out on a journey of survival and discovery--as agonizing loneliness, witnessed brutalities, and numbing hunger all determine to break Alfie’s faith in those around him. Alfie must navigate the many minefields, real and psychological, that lurk before him in his uncertain future and behind him in his troubled past. Even upon Alfie’s eventual escape to America, the very idea of family is thrown into question, as long buried secrets are revealed.Throughout this story of love and loyalty, war and renewal, betrayal and trust, Alfie finds that the most difficult road he faces is the beleaguered path of his own memories.

Landmines In War And Peace written by Mike Croll and has been published by Casemate Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-21 with History categories.

Land mines and their antecedents have been used on the battlefield from ancient times, through the world wars, to the modern conflicts in the developing world. Their use in the developing world caused tens of thousands of civilian casualties, and the resulting international outrage transformed rapidly into a highly effective global movement to ban land mines and a multi million dollar mine action business. This book describes how technology and military tactics defined land mine development and deployment, why they are such an effective weapon of war, and how an unlikely alliance of soldiers, peace activists, development workers and celebrities succeeded in banning the use of antipersonnel mines. Comparisons are made between the post WW2 clearance of around 100 million land mines in Europe and contemporary efforts to clear a similar number in the developing world. By 1947 Europe was largely mine free, yet after nearly 20 years and expenditure of $4 billion the land mine crisis in the developing world continues. The elusive search for the easy way to clear mines is described. Despite experiments with machines, airships, rats and explosive clearance methods, mine clearance remains a hazardous, labor-intensive task undertaken by teams of deminers using metal detectors and needle-like probes.
