Text in Danish. Holger Pedersen (1867-1953) was one of Denmark's greatest scholars within Indoeuropean studies. During the years 1892-1896 he travelled extensively in Europe to broaden his field of language studies. His letters to scholars in Denmark provide a unique insight into the working methods of a young linguist. The letters, preserved in the Royal Library in Copenhagen, have been reproduced in the original orthography in the book.

Hvem bestemmer hvad der er god videnskab? I det 19. og 20. århundrede har svaret været universitetets professorer: De fastlagde de videnskabelige normer, f.eks. gennem eksamenskrav, disputatsbedømmelser og lærerindstillinger. I Professoratet beskriver Pelle Oliver Larsen hvorledes akademikere opnåede en sådan magt ved Det Filosofiske Fakultet i København i årene 1870-1920: Hvordan blev man professor? Hvad var beslutningsgrundlaget for udnævnelsen? Da universitetets lærerforsamling i 1904 anbefalede at give kvinder adgang til universitetets videnskabelige stillinger, blev der argumenteret med at det var i overensstemmelse med »den nedarvede regel«: Kun videnskabelige kvalifikationer tæller når et professorat skal besættes. I virkeligheden var denne nedarvede regel et resultat af endnu uafsluttede forhandlinger og kampe. Kampen om Det Filosofiske Fakultet blev udkæmpet på flere fronter. Det var en indre kamp i universitetet og fakultetet om videnskabelige idealer og betydningen af politik og religion, køn og moral i videnskabens verden. Men det var også en ydre kamp mod statsmagten, der krævede loyalitet af sine embedsmænd - også professorerne. I bogen fortælles om hvorledes modernisterne gradvis vandt denne kamp. Fakultetet løsrev sig fra staten og gjorde videnskabskriteriet til det eneste gyldige. Centralt i denne fortælling står sagen om Georg Brandes' forhold til universitetet. Brandes ansøgte i 1871 om ansættelse i litteraturhistorie, men blev afvist af politiske årsager. I løbet af de næste 30 år kom det ved flere lejligheder på tale at gøre Brandes til professor. Bogen indeholder den hidtil mest udførlige analyse af denne sag, der fik stor symbolsk betydning fordi den tydeliggjorde at videnskabelige og politiske kvalifikationer ikke nødvendigvis følges ad.
