Informasi digital melalui media sosial yang gratis dan cepat telah mengalahkan media-media cetak tradisional. Semua orang bisa menjadi produser informasi tanpa perlu menggunakan kaidah-kaidah pencarian informasi dan penerbitan baik cetak maupun digital yang biasa dilakukan oleh media-media tradisional. Untuk kepentingan politik atau ekonomi, banyak pihak yang tidak segan-segan menyebarkan hoaks, kabar bohong. Kita tahu peran media sosial dalam memenangkan Donald Trump menjadi Presiden Amerika Serikat dan mempengaruhi orang Inggris untuk keluar dari Uni Eropa melalui referendum Brexit. Suatu tantangan besar bagi kebebasan dan demokrasi sehingga banyak orang yang mempertanyakan masa depan demokrasi di dunia. Apalagi algoritma media sosial juga telah membelah masyarakat. Tidak banyak buku yang membahas tentang demokrasi yang memberikan sudut pandang yang komprehensif dari berbagai disiplin yang terbit di Indonesia.
