Der aktuelle politische Rechtstrend in den Ländern des Westens bei – trotz oder wegen – seit Jahren angestiegener Bildungsexpansion wirft einmal mehr die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Bildung und Demokratie auf, sind es doch keineswegs nur sogenannte Bürger*innen minderen Bildungsstands, die menschen- und freiheitsfeindlichen Ideologien ihre Stimme geben. Die politische Philosophie spätestens seit Platon vertrat oft die Überzeugung, dass nur Gebildete, im besten Falle Philosophen, ein Gemeinwesen regieren könnten – und sogar Herbert Marcuse war noch allen Ernstes der Ansicht, dass die einzige Antwort auf Platons erzieherische Diktatur die demokratische erzieherische Diktatur freier Menschen sei. In seiner bildungsphilosophischen Studie geht Micha Brumlik dem Verhältnis von Demokratie, Bildung und Erziehung auf den Spuren der Klassiker von Kant über Rousseau, von Wilhelm von Humboldt über Dewey bis zu Adorno nach, ohne dabei empirische Untersuchungen zu Bildung und Erziehung im Zeitalter der Globalisierung zu vernachlässigen. 'Bildung', das war noch bei Humboldt, im Zeitalter der deutschen Klassik, der Inbegriff einer autonomen Weiterentwicklung der Subjekte in Einsamkeit und Freiheit durch Wissenschaft und Kunst. Brumlik geht es nicht um ein lediglich kulturkritisches Lamento, sondern um die Suche nach einer Antwort auf die Frage, welche Bildung am Ende zu mündigen Bürger*innen führen kann.
