Excerpt from New York University: Its Organization and Equipment Meanwhile, the Committee had appointed a sub - committee to invite men of eminence in higher education to attend an educational convention in New York, October 20-23, 1830. This was not only for the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the views of educational experts in the establish ment of the proposed university, but also for the purpose Of promoting the common cause Of education throughout the nation. The meetings of this convocation were held in the Common Council Chamber of the City, and representatives of a dozen different American institutions of higher educa tion were present. Many themes of educational importance were discussed, including the reasons for the supremacy of European universities, the different conditions existing in the United States and in Europe, the proper curriculum for a college, the question of graduate study and of a school for the training of teachers. All agreed with George Bancroft, that New York City Offered an excellent field for the study of medicine and of law. Henry] E. Dwight of New Haven said: The friends of literature throughout the Union are looking with intense interest toward this University. AS our population becomes more dense, there must be a greater division of mental as well as physical labor, and to meet the wants of the country, our literary institutions must be remodeled or new ones must be established. Excerpt from The Semi-Centennial Celebration of the Organization: Of the University of Michigan, June 26-30, 1887 At a meeting of the University Senate, June 8, 1885, it was voted, on the motion of Professor Winchell, to request the Board of Regents to make provision for an appropriate celebration of the approaching semi-centennial of the organization of the University. At the first meeting of the Board following this action, June 23, 1885, the matter was favorably considered, and the Senate was directed to report a plan for the proposed celebration. This request was laid before the Senate at this annual meeting, October 12, 1885, and the whole question was then referred to a committee of the Senate, consisting of eleven members, representing the various departments of the University, with the President as chairman. The committee was constituted as follows: - The committee held its first meeting on the 20th of January, 1886. Professor Demmon was appointed secretary.
