This wide-ranging study touches many aspects of sixteenth-century British culture, putting Shakespearean drama into the context of one of the century's greatest preoccupations, the study and use of rhetoric. Its multifaceted thesis is developed cumulatively over four chapters, each linked to the one preceding, moving from the general picture of the role of rhetoric in sixteenth-century English culture, through its contribution to the rise of Elizabethan drama, and culminating in its specific application to the interpretation of Shakespeare. Recognizing the thesis's challenge to critical orthodoxy, both traditional and contemporary, in all of these areas, its development proceeds with full discussion and deliberation at every stage, citing a broad range of sixteenth-century as well as Classical rhetorical materials to justify a radically subversive reinterpretation of their thrust. Trevor McNeely is Professor Emeritus of English at Brandon University.

The distinctive prophetic quality of Thomas Merton's spirituality, shaped by figures ranging from the Hebrew prophets to Thich Nhat Hanh, emerges from this fresh examination of the works Merton read, responded to, and celebrated in his own writing. In the School of Prophets examines the final decade of Merton's life, mainly through the lens of his journals and letters, and helps to fill a gap in contemporary Merton studies. William Blake and various Latin American poets; novelists Boris Pasternak, Albert Camus, and William Faulkner; existentialists Søren Kierkegaard and Gabriel Marcel; monks of the Egyptian desert; and Bernard of Clairvaux number among those who helped shape Merton's prophetic consciousness, leading him to reexamine what it means to be both a human being and a contemplative monk of the twentieth century.

"In this original and insightful book, Dorothy Jonaitis offers a refreshing alternative to the popular view of biblical apocalyptic writing as gloom-and-doom, fire-and-brimstone literature. Rather, she presents it as literature of hope and its authors as people who knew how to use their creative imaginations to communicate their hope-filled messages. The reader will come to see the apocalyptic authors of both the Old and the New Testaments as dramatists and will learn to preach, teach, and imagine their writings as dramatic messages to be applied in contemporary times of crisis."--BOOK JACKET.

Cormac McCarthy's work sounds warnings of impending apocalypse, but it also implies that redemption remains available. Nicholas Monk argues that McCarthy's response to the modern world is more subtle and less laden with despair than many realize, and that his work represents an understanding of the world that transcends the political divisions of right and left, escapes the reductive nature of identity politics, and looks to futures beyond the immediately adjacent. He positions McCarthy as an acute chronicler of the American condition at the beginning of a new century. Tracing the development of modernity, Monk explores the associated political and philosophical undercurrents in McCarthy and identifies how they are generated and what they oppose. He focuses on language, aesthetics, violence, the spiritual, and the natural environment and the animals that inhabit it. He examines the experience of engaging with McCarthy's fiction in order to reveal why so many people report that "reading Cormac McCarthy changed my life."

Living Knowledge In West African Islam written by Zachary Valentine Wright and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-04 with Religion categories.

Living Knowledge in West African Islam examines the actualization of religious identity in the community of Ibrāhīm Niasse (d.1975, Senegal). With millions of followers throughout Africa and the world, the community arguably represents one of the twentieth century’s most successful Islamic revivals. Niasse’s followers, members of the Tijāniyya Sufi order, gave particular attention to the widespread transmission of the experiential knowledge (maʿrifa) of God. They also worked to articulate a global Islamic identity in the crucible of African decolonization. The central argument of this book is that West African Sufism is legible only with an appreciation of centuries of Islamic knowledge specialization in the region. Sufi masters and disciples reenacted and deepened preexisting teacher-student relationships surrounding the learning of core Islamic disciplines, such as the Qurʾān and jurisprudence. Learning Islam meant the transformative inscription of sacred knowledge in the student’s very being, a disposition acquired in the master’s exemplary physical presence. Sufism did not undermine traditional Islamic orthodoxy: the continued transmission of Sufi knowledge has in fact preserved and revived traditional Islamic learning in West Africa.
