Steven J. Cole refers to the Apostle Paul's spiritual experience as described in Romans 7:14-20 (KJV) as the merry-go-round of sin. It is an experience that I believe every child of God is subject to as a result of the evil in our world. The crust of it is this: "For the good that I would do I do not: but the evil I would not do, that I do" (Romans 7:19). Without question, we want to get off this merry-go-round of sin, but that is not an easy task, for we are held there by an unseen master-a masked evil whose presence has gripped the whole of our society and the world and placed in it a mind-set that is deprived of understanding, judgment, and perception. Paul, through spiritual discernment, exposed this evil in Ephesians 6:12. He said, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness in this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." He unmasked the evil in our world, revealing that we are all affected by its presence. Christ has called each of us to recognize this masked evil and expose it to the world that we have been charged to impact positively for him.

The modern age with its emphasis on technical rationality has enabled a new and dangerous form of evil--administrative evil. Unmasking Administrative Evil discusses the overlooked relationship between evil and public affairs, as well as other fields and professions in public life. The authors argue that the tendency toward administrative evil, as manifested in acts of dehumanization and genocide, is deeply woven into the identity of public affairs. The common characteristic of administrative evil is that ordinary people within their normal professional and administrative roles can engage in acts of evil without being aware that they are doing anything wrong. Under conditions of moral inversion, people may even view their evil activity as good. In the face of what is now a clear and present danger in the United States, this book seeks to lay the groundwork for a more ethical and democratic public life; one that recognizes its potential for evil, and thereby creates greater possibilities for avoiding the hidden pathways that lead to state-sponsored dehumanization and destruction. What's new in the Fourth Edition of Unmasking Administrative Evil: UAE is updated and revised with new scholarship on administrative ethics, evil, and contemporary politics. The authors include new cases on the dangers of market-based governance, contracting out, and deregulation. There is an enhanced focus on the potential for administrative evil in the private sector. The authors have written a new Afterword on administrative approaches to the aftermath of evil, with the potential for expiation, healing, and reparations.

The relationship between evil and public affairs, as well as other fields and professions in public life, has come to the fore as institutions of government seek new ways to operate in an environment of extreme mistrust. Unmasking Administrative Evil, 5th Edition argues that the tendency toward administrative evil, as manifested in acts of dehumanization and genocide, is deeply woven into the identity of public affairs. Indeed, ordinary people may simply act appropriately in their organizational role—in essence, just doing what those around them would agree they should be doing—and at the same time, participate in what a critical and reasonable observer, usually well after the fact, would call evil. Even worse, under conditions of moral inversion, ordinary people can all too easily engage in acts of administrative evil while believing that what they are doing is not only correct, but in fact, good. This 5th edition offers important updates, including: A thorough discussion of contemporary virtue ethics as the field has evolved to offer an alternative to technical/rational ethics. An all-new three-part structure (What is Administrative Evil?, History and Cases, and The Future of Ethics in Praetorian Times) designed to aid in course organization and instruction. All-new cases, including an examination of the Flint water disaster, to provide contemporary examples of how populations can be marginalized and harmed by administrative processes that are blind to their consequences until it is too late. Laying the groundwork for a more ethical and democratic public life – one that recognizes its potential for evil, and avoids state-sponsored dehumanization and destruction – Unmasking Administrative Evil, 5th Edition is required reading for all students of administrative ethics and public service ethics, as well those in other administrative sciences.

Although social scientists generally do not discuss "evil" in an academic setting, there is no denying that it has existed in public administration throughout human history. Hundreds of millions of human beings have died as a direct or indirect consequence of state-sponsored violence. The authors argue that administrative evil, or destructiveness, is part of the identity of all modern public administration (as it is part of psychoanalytic study at the individual level). It goes beyond a superficial critique of public administration and lays the groundwork for a more effective and humane profession.

It has always been the subject of my attention as to why bad things always happen to good people. Or why is it that innocent people are the ones that always get hurt? Or why is it that evil or evilness always seems to overshadow good or goodness? What calls my attention even more is how individuals, families, nations, and even ministries can be victims of an atmosphere of reoccurring negative events in their lives in which they are unable to give any logical explanations for. It’s as if they were fighting against an invisible force that’s opposing all their attempts to move forward in their lives. What spirit force is behind all these evil and unjust happenings that are occurring around our world? What is this spirit that leaves in its wake a trail of pain, hurt, and destruction? The spiritual force behind all these inexplicable atrocities has a name and it is called the spirit of injustice, the truth never before revealed behind the struggles we have to face daily. The assignment of this evil spirit is to cause opposition and difficulties in the lives of people. Here you will find out how to identify this evil spirit of injustice, how it operates, what strategies it uses to attack us, and how it can infiltrate our lives, families, and nations. You will learn how to break off with cycles of injustice in your life, how to come out victorious from its attacks, and how to activate God’s blessings over your life. You will also learn how to reaffirm your true identity as a child of God and start seeing yourself according to the parameters of God’s kingdom and not as your surroundings and circumstances dictate them to you. Our target is to unmask this evil spirit that has been doing warfare against God’s people for centuries. It is our greatest desire that you can reach the fulfillment of your purpose that God has prepared for you from before the foundation of the world.

This book examines the successful no-confidence movement led by faculty at Saint Louis University in 2013 in an effort to unseat the university president, considering the reasons for success when similar movements often fail. Through a series of chapters written by faculty from many disciplines at the university, it uses a particular episode of faculty protest to shed light on wider issues concerning the circumstances in which faculty are likely to be motivated to protest, the institutional frameworks that make protest possible and the strategies that get results. As such, it will appeal to scholars of social movements with interests in protest and mobilization in the field of education.

Ecojustice, social justice, and the Christian conscience ""This is a grand prophetic book motivated by love and focused on justicesocial justice, ecological justice, and dignity for 'the least of these.' Don't miss it!"" --Cornel West, Union Theological Seminary ""This book is a gift to all consumers looking for a way out of their addiction. Those of us (myself included) who know our excessive consumption is causing ecological and economic disasters should read Professor Moe-Lobedas new book. It is the best one-volume analysis of our moral dilemma I know of and, even better, it suggests principles and practices to help deal with it."" --Sallie McFague, Vancouver School of Theology ""Cynthia Moe-Lobeda's Resisting Structural Evil: Love as Ecological and Economic Transformation takes the form of a powerful contribution to Christian ethics, but in fact it is also a major contribution to anyone in any religious or spiritual tradition who seeks to maintain both a commitment to God and to global healing and transformation. Easily accessible and charming in presentation, deep in its ability to confront difficult issues squarely and in a nuanced way, courageous in insisting that we see reality not only as it is but as it could be if we were willing to be ""unrealistic"" for a few moments, manifesting daring of thought combined with a pervasive humilitythis is a true classic of spiritual progressive consciousness, packed full of ideas that should be taught in every college and university and religious seminary, every church, synagogue, mosque and ashram!"" --Rabbi Michael Lerner, Editor, Tikkun Magazine; Chair, The Network of Spiritual Progressives ""Cynthia Moe-Lobeda's book is one of the strongest statements yet to be made on the intricate connections between ecology and justice. The powerful stories and persuasive arguments lay the groundwork for the necessary transformations ahead. It will be a catalyst for change!"" --Mary Evelyn Tucker, Forum on Religion and Ecology, Yale University Key Features: Mapping the ethical terrain of an imperiled planet Convincingly showing how ecojustice relates to economic justice Rethinking Christian ethics in light of the ecological crisis The increasingly pressing situation of Planet Earth poses urgent ethical questions for Christians. But, as Cynthia Moe-Lobeda argues, the future of the earth is not simply a matter of protecting species and habitats but of rethinking the very meaning of Christian ethics. The earth crisis cannot be understood apart from the larger human crisiseconomic equity, social values, and human purpose are bound up with the planet's survival. In a sense, she says, the whole earth is a moral community. Reorienting Christian ethics from its usual anthropocentrism to an ecocentrism entails a new framework that Moe-Lobeda lays out in her first chapters, culminating in a creative rethinking of how it is that we understand morally. With this ""moral epistemology"" in place, she unfolds her notion of ""moral vision"" and applies it to the present situation in a full-fledged earth-honoring, justice-seeking Christian ethical stance.
