Ma se la Comédie humaine gli suggerisce il progetto e le dimensioni dell’opera, peculiare di Zola è il tentativo di interpretare i fenomeni morali e sociali attraverso le dottrine – alquanto semplificate - di Taine, di Darwin e di Claude Bernard. Lo scrittore, però, non si lascia mai realmente “legare le mani” da alcuna teoria; anzi, l’enorme interesse artistico e storico che il grande ciclo dei Rougon-Macquart (cui appartengono i romanzi raccolti nel volume tranne Thérèse Raquin e il lungo racconto L’attacco al mulino) ancora conserva deriva proprio dalla salutare contraddizione tra l’ingenuo schematismo del metodo e il temperamento dell’autore, la sua accesa immaginazione, la sua indomabile “indisciplina” emotiva e stilistica. La sensibilità sociale e l’onestà intellettuale di Zola riescono quasi sempre a superare i limiti del naturalismo positivistico e il facile culto del progresso, consentendogli di affrontare (a differenza delle correnti decadentiste ed estetizzanti che dominavano ormai la letteratura) il conflitto fondamentale del suo tempo, ovvero la lotta tra classe proprietaria e proletariato, dandone una rappresentazione assolutamente “scandalosa”, potente e veritiera, tanto da farlo definire «un momento della coscienza umana». Il volume comprende, oltre a una bibliografia aggiornata, un repertorio degli adattamenti cinematografici, teatrali e televisivi delle opere di Zola inedito in Italia per vastità e completezza. Émile Zola nato a Parigi nel 1840, è uno dei massimi scrittori europei dell’Ottocento. Fin da giovane poté lavorare nel campo dell’editoria e nel 1864 pubblicò il suo primo libro, Contes à Ninon. Da allora continuò a scrivere senza sosta fino alla morte, causata dalle esalazioni di una stufa nella sua casa di Parigi nel 1902, mentre stava lavorando; le modalità della sua fine fecero nascere il sospetto che fosse stato assassinato. È molto noto il suo J’accuse, il pamphlet con cui lo scrittore denuncia al presidente della Repubblica francese tutte le irregolarità e le ingiustizie commesse durante il processo al capitano ebreo Alfred Dreyfus, e a causa del quale Zola fu costretto a fuggire per un periodo in Inghilterra.
