This title was first published in 2000: The 1997 election marked the prospect of a new era in social welfare - the possibility of establishing a third phase in the post-war history of the welfare state (the first being the creation of the Keynesian welfare state, the second the Thatcher/Major neo-liberal reforms). The key aim of this book is to critically explore the options for the future of welfare under New Labour. The welfare state that the government inherited from the Conservatives is widely believed to be in a critical condition. At the same time, there is evidence of widening social inequality in Britain which existing social policy measures fail to address. Whilst acknowledging that future welfare strategies are likely to operate within a market paradigm, the key argument of this book is that welfare providers should operate within a more accountable and democratic environment where service-users have the right to participate in decision-making processes affecting their welfare - regardless of the ability to pay. The book concludes that the dominant discourse shaping social policy in Britain must be recognized and should not be accepted uncritically and that there are very real economic (as well as social) benefits from taking measures to address social disadvantage.

Social Policy And Social Change written by Jillian Jimenez and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Political Science categories.

A timely examination of social policy through a social constructivist and economic lens, Social Policy and Social Change illuminates the root causes of common social problems and how policy has attempted to ameliorate them. In so doing, the book focuses on how social policies in the United States can be transformed to promote social justice for all groups. The book uniquely offers both an historical analysis of social problems and social policies, and an economic analysis of how capitalism and the market economy have contributed to social problems and impacted social policies. The book goes beyond the U.S. borders to examine the impact of globalization in the United States and in the Global South. It considers the meaning and impact of the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States and explores the policy solutions his administration has proposed to deal with the economic recession of 2008-2009. The book also discusses social workers as agents of social change and advocates of social and economic justice. It examines five key realms: Poverty in families and the welfare system, poverty among the elderly and social security, child maltreatment and child welfare policy, health and mental health policy, and housing policy. Social Policy and Social Change is a primary text for social policy/social welfare policy courses in MSW programs and possibly some higher level BSW programs. It will be supplemented with a comprehensive ancillary program, including a test bank, instructor's manual, and student website.

Part One provides a general overview of social policy and Part Two discusses the policy-making processes, from the international factors that influence them to the ways in which a social worker can become part of this process. Part Three focuses on current social policy issues, and Part Four offers a look to the future. Each chapter of this best-selling book has been thoroughly updated for this new edition with regard to current policy, debated issues, and resources cited. Three new chapters have been added, including an overview of adult mental health policy and a critical look at risk assessment in child welfare. There is also a discussion of current challenges to the Charter of Rights and Canadians increasing use of the justice system to shape social policy. As a result, the reader gains an informed perspective of policy development and evaluation. Although designed primarily for use by social workers, the book will benefit anyone who is involved in the policy-making process.

The Impact Of Social Policy written by Victor George and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-03 with Social Science categories.

First published in 1984, The Impact of Social Policy analyses and evaluates the effects of social policy on British society in the post-war period. The focus is on the consequences of social policy and the authors differentiate clearly between the objectives of social policy and what it actually achieves. What governments and individuals claim that social policy does, and what happens in practice, are not always one and the same thing. George and Wilding examine the impact of social policy in a coherent and logical way, looking at the social, the economic and the political aspects. They conclude that social services are conducive to economic growth, and that they are an important instrument for enhancing social well-being although they do not reduce socio-economic inequalities to any substantial degree. They also point out that although social services buttress political stability, they have not prevented a political crisis in the welfare state. This book will be of interest to students of sociology, public policy, political science, and economics.
