Vietnam and Beyond is a comprehensive, in-depth study of one of the most thought-provoking writers of the Vietnam War generation: Tim O'Brien. Through its thematic—rather than chronological—approach, this volume sets itself apart from previous readings of O'Brien's development as a trauma artist and an outspoken chronicler of American involvement in Vietnam. Stefania Ciocia highlights O'Brien's compelling preoccupation with the role and the ethical responsibility of the storyteller— with his clear privileging of “story truth” over “happening truth”—in order to make a bold statement about the power of fiction and narrative.

The author's main zeal is for the Cushite race, for which he is as zealous as is Max Muller for the younger Aryan dynasty. He holds that the earliest civilization of which we have any trace, dating back to 7000 B. c. at the latest, was that commonly called the Ethiopic, but which really had its seat on the Arabian side of the Red Sea, and had no connection with over the way. Of this civilization, Egypt and Chaldea were but the children; it colonized the valleys of the Nile and Euphrates; it occupied India, Western Asia, and extensive regions of Africa. Commerce, manufactures, and astronomy all reached a high development during that great epoch of colonization. It was a branch of this race which established what is now called the Age of Bronze in Western Europe, and which built the temples of Abury and Stonehenge. The Cushites taught the Northern nations the worship of Baal, whose midnight fires on midsummer eve are hardly yet extinguished in England, and have testified to that remote idolatry as surely as the lingering fifth of November fires on our Essex hills still keep alive the memory of Guy Fawkes.

Following the footsteps of Marco Polo, Alexander and Chenghis Khan, Gautham’s 20,000 km journey along the Silk Road traverses 8 countries - Greece – Turkey – Iran – Turkmenistan – Uzbekistan – Kyrgyzstan – China – Hong Kong. The adventure of travelling by land is not just about re-exploring the paths of ancient traders and conquerors but also involves observing the traversing of diverse cultures, ideas, religions, food and customs along the Silk Road. Everything about the modern-day Silk Road countries – the markets, the people, the rulers, the rebels, invited him to discover, acknowledge and experience them in their truest form. Mountains, rivers, deserts and oases challenged him, just as they intrigued the ancient Silk Road traveler. Part travelogue, part historical interpretation and part geo-political & economic investigation, the book intertwines between various schools of thought, observations, analyses and perspectives, regarding the Silk Road. Every new day brings new adventures such as staying at Buddhist monastery, getting interrogated by the police for being considered a spy, attending underground parties, chased by the wild dogs, repairing a truck in the middle of the desert, trying to buy a goat, crossing snowcapped mountains and many more embarrassing, dangerous and surprisingly wonderful endeavors, throughout his journey along the Silk Road.

“As the first part of the title indicates, my interest in looking at intertextuality and transformation still maintains a prominent place throughout this book as well. If we believe that ‘no text is an island,’ then we will understand that the relationships between and within texts across the years become a fascinating place for academic inquiry. I included the word ‘boundaries’ into the title because we never get tired of voicing our opinions about texts which traverse relegated boundaries, such as genre or medium. Not only am I interested in discussing what these changes across boundaries mean socially, historically, and culturally, but also what they mean geographically, which accounts for the second part of my title. “I am very excited that this book will be placing even more emphasis on children’s literature in an international scene than my first book did, in the sense that I have added more scholars on an international level. I hesitate to list the nationalities of all of the contributors here because quite a few have themselves crossed international boundaries in different ways, by either studying abroad or finding permanent residency in foreign countries. Nevertheless, the writers have lived extensively in or identify as being from Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United States of America, and Wales.” —Introduction
