How does it feel to lose your job in front of ten million people? To ask a Government Whip for time to see your husband? To represent the Secretary of State for Health at a family planning clinic on the day you fail your fifth IVF cycle? To be loved and hated by people who don't even know you? To be the second black woman elected to Parliament? To be a Jewish woman representing a largely Muslim constituency? To be the only MP who likes house music? A decade is a long time in politics, and in these candid diaries Oona King shows how she has changed since becoming an MP in 1997. From the intense strain on her marriage, to her desperate struggle to have a baby, Oona reveals how she chose to abandon her political ambition in favour of another: to have a life.

Literary Classics Gold Medal in Historical Young Adult Literary Classics Words on Wings Young Adult Book Award Wednesday, December 10, 1941 "Hitler speaks to Reichstag tomorrow. We just heard the first casualty lists over the radio. . . . Lots of boys from Michigan and Illinois. Oh my God! . . . Life goes on though. We read our books in the library and eat lunch, bridge, etc. Phy. Sci. and Calculus. Darn Descartes. Reading Walt Whitman now." This diary of a smart, astute, and funny teenager provides a fascinating record of what an everyday American girl felt and thought during the Depression and the lead-up to World War II. Young Chicagoan Joan Wehlen describes her daily life growing up in the city and ruminates about the impending war, daily headlines, and major touchstones of the era—FDR's radio addresses, the Lindbergh kidnapping, Goodbye Mr. Chips and Citizen Kane, Churchill and Hitler, war work and Red Cross meetings. Included are Joan's charming doodles of her latest dress or haircut reflective of the era. Home Front Girl is not only an entertaining and delightful read but an important primary source—a vivid account of a real American girl's lived experiences.

Liminality And The Modern written by Bjørn Thomassen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-06 with Social Science categories.
This book provides the history and genealogy of an increasingly important subject: liminality. Coming to the fore in recent years in social and political theory and extending beyond is original use as developed within anthropology, liminality has come to denote spaces and moments in which the taken-for-granted order of the world ceases to exist and novel forms emerge, often in unpredictable ways. Liminality and the Modern offers a comprehensive introduction to this concept, discussing its development and laying out a conceptual and experiential framework for thinking about change in terms of liminality. Applying this framework to questions surrounding the implosion of ’non-spaces’, the analysis of major historical periods and the study of political revolution, the book also explores its possible uses in social science research and its implications for our understanding of the uncertainty and contingency of the liquid structures of modern society. Shedding new light on a concept central to social thought, as well as its capacity for pushing social and political theory in new directions, this book will be of interest to scholars across the social sciences and philosophy working in fields such as social, political and anthropological theory, cultural studies, social and cultural geography, and historical anthropology and sociology.

"With the ascension of a new emperor and the dawn of the Reiwa Era, Kenneth J. Ruoff has expanded upon and updated The People’s Emperor, his study of the monarchy’s role as a political, societal, and cultural institution in contemporary Japan. Many Japanese continue to define the nation’s identity through the imperial house, making it a window into Japan’s postwar history. Ruoff begins by examining the reform of the monarchy during the U.S. occupation and then turns to its evolution since the Japanese regained the power to shape it. To understand the monarchy’s function in contemporary Japan, the author analyzes issues such as the role of individual emperors in shaping the institution, the intersection of the monarchy with politics, the emperor’s and the nation’s responsibility for the war, nationalistic movements in support of the monarchy, and the remaking of the once-sacrosanct throne into a “people’s imperial house” embedded in the postwar culture of democracy. Finally, Ruoff examines recent developments, including the abdication of Emperor Akihito and the heir crisis, which have brought to the forefront the fragility of the imperial line under the current legal system, leading to calls for reform."

On September 16, 1999, rainfall from Hurricane Floyd swelled North Carolina’s rivers, flooding tens of thousands of homes, businesses, and communities across the eastern third of the state; taking 52 lives; and causing an estimated $6 billion in damages. Faces from the Flood is a compelling look back at the state’s most destructive natural disaster, conveyed through the words of those who endured it. Thirty-seven interviews with victims, heroes, volunteers, scientists, and government officials offer tales of dramatic rescues, sorrowful losses, and the quiet determination to survive and rebuild. The story of Floyd is far from over, and North Carolinians must be prepared to face similar storms in the future, warn Richard Moore and Jay Barnes. They conclude with an assessment of the state’s response to Floyd and a discussion of what programs should be initiated, maintained, or strengthened to prepare for future storms. Through evocative personal stories, maps, tables, and dozens of striking photographs, Faces from the Flood highlights the dramatic impact of Hurricane Floyd. It will serve as a valuable reference for future explorations of North Carolina’s greatest disaster.

Andy Rooney's syndicated newspaper columns and cantankerous "60 Minutes" essays have made him one of the best known curmudgeons in America. Rooney writes about almost everything, boasting in the introduction to Not That You Asked . . . : "There's something in this book that will irritate almost everyone." Andy Rooney once again proves why he is one of America’s favorite curmudgeons. Writing at the top of his form, Rooney covers a plethora of subjects, from getting rid of leftovers to the worst job in the world, from travel tips for the travel industry to the best hotel room he ever had. Andy Rooney has an opinion on everything, and in his inimitably irreverent and crotchety style he voices here those things we’ve always wanted to say but never thought we could get away with. You’ll find yourself smiling and frowning and involuntarily bobbing your head in agreement. Praise for Not That You Asked . . . “As television watchers know, Andrew A. Rooney is a very funny fellow. He can be even funnier in print, as Not That You Asked . . . amply demonstrates.”—The Associated Press “The greatest thing about Andy is that he makes everyone uncomfortable—especially me.”—Don Hewitt, Executive Producer, 60 Minutes “The best of Rooney’s collections of columns so far . . . irreverent and warmhearted, thoughtful and provocative.”—The Orlando Sentinel
