Chaos Imagined written by Martin Meisel and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

The stories we tell in our attempt to make sense of the world—our myths and religion, literature and philosophy, science and art—are the comforting vehicles we use to transmit ideas of order. But beneath the quest for order lies the uneasy dread of fundamental disorder. True chaos is hard to imagine and even harder to represent. In this book, Martin Meisel considers the long effort to conjure, depict, and rationalize extreme disorder, with all the passion, excitement, and compromises the act provokes. Meisel builds a rough history from major social, psychological, and cosmological turning points in the imagining of chaos. He uses examples from literature, philosophy, painting, graphic art, science, linguistics, music, and film, particularly exploring the remarkable shift in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from conceiving of chaos as disruptive to celebrating its liberating and energizing potential. Discussions of Sophocles, Plato, Lucretius, Calderon, Milton, Haydn, Blake, Faraday, Chekhov, Faulkner, Wells, and Beckett, among others, are matched with incisive readings of art by Brueghel, Rubens, Goya, Turner, Dix, Dada, and the futurists. Meisel addresses the revolution in mapping energy and entropy and the manifold effect of thermodynamics. He then uses this chaotic frame to elaborate on purpose, mortality, meaning, and mind.

Negative Psychoanalysis For The Living Dead written by Julie Reshe and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-21 with Philosophy categories.

This book offers a radical alternative to the positive orientation of popular psychology. This positive orientation has been criticized numerous times. However, there has yet to be a coherent alternative proposed. We all know today that life hurts and that there is no ultimate remedy to this pain. The positive approach feels to us as dishonest and irrelevant. We require a new, more negative, perspective and practice, one that is honest and does not pretend to offer an escape from the agonies of the world. This book offers in three main chapters a ‘depressive realist’ perspective that explores the structural role of negativity and tragedy in relation to the individual psyche, society, and nature. It explores the possibility of ‘negative psychoanalysis’ which takes into account the tragedy of human existence instead of adopting escapist positions.

Science And Christianity written by Tim Reddish and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-15 with Religion categories.

Too often conversations on Science and Christianity skate over much deeper assumptions--or perceptions--on the nature and interpretation of Scripture, and the nature of science and of God. Instead, the rhetoric goes quickly towards contentious issues, like evolution, global warming, or genetic engineering, without establishing a framework of mutual understanding. Consequently, "conversations" can take place between people who completely misunderstand each other because those foundations have not been clearly articulated. In this introductory book you are invited on a journey of discovery, one that makes us self-aware of our starting assumptions. It is only from a framework of critical engagement with both science and the Bible that contemporary issues and the needs of the church and society can be addressed. While the Creator is one who brings order, this book also reminds us that untamed chaos also has a God-ordained place within creation. The author explores the element of chance that seems to be at the heart of nature and shows how this can be incorporated constructively within Christian thinking. Nature is not mere mechanism and is more "open" than we might first think. This means that miracles are scientifically plausible and prayer can really change things. . . .

'A critic must be able to feel the impact of a work of art in all its complexity and force. To do so, he must be a man of force and complexity himself...' 'A critic must be emotionally alive in every fibre, intellectually capable and skilful in essential logic, and then morally very honest.' These comments by D. H. Lawrence are as close a description as any of himself as a critic. They come from his essay on fellow novelist John Galsworthy, and there are many other pieces on novels and novelists in this selection. But Lawrence's range of genres extends to poetry and plays andpaintings, and his critical writing encompasses an enormous variety of subjects, from Aeschylus and the Apocalypse to symbolism and syphilis, for his nterests are philosophical , psychological, religious, moral, sociological, historical and cultural as well as literary and artistic. This selectionis a treasure-trove of 'thought adventures' by one of literature's liveliest critical spirits.
