Ausgehend vom Beitritt der DDR zur BRD (1990), dem dadurch erzwungenen Wechsel der Institutionen und des Wertesystems, untersucht der Autor Aspekte des individuellen Wertewandels und der Situationsverarbeitung im Transformationsprozeß bei Generälen und Offizieren der hohen und höchsten Führungsebene der Nationalen Volksarmee (NVA). Mit Hilfe des Erklärungsansatzes des Methodologischen Individualismus und der Theorie der kognitiven Dissonanz Leon Festingers (Bewältigungsstrategien) wird rückblickend innerhalb dreier Zeitebenen (bis 1989, 1989/90, 1991-93) dieser historisch einmalige Vorgang der Auflösung einer Armee (NVA) durch eine bisher feindliche Armee (Bundeswehr) von Zeitzeugen beschrieben. Dabei entstand ein beeindruckendes, fesselndes,zeitgeschichtlich einmaliges und hochinformatives Buch, dessen Ergebnisse mögliche Folgerungen für den Eintritt osteuropäischer Staaten in die NATO zulassen.
