A generation of men who fought for our freedom looks back at their lives; some with melancholy, some with unforgotten energy, and other with reluctance. World War II means something different to each man who served, yet a common and tightly woven thread binds their attitudes and senses of patriotism. This moving book captures the long-lost era when men were men -- when going to war meant actually engaging the enemy rather than raining bombs on them from above and never actually seeing them. Those stories have something to tell us about lives; the lives of the men interviewed, our own lives and the lives of the millions of people who did not live through another of mankind's follies.

A history of audiobooks, from entertainment & rehabilitation for blinded World War I soldiers to a twenty-first-century competitive industry. Histories of the book often move straight from the codex to the digital screen. Left out of that familiar account are nearly 150 years of audio recordings. Recounting the fascinating history of audio-recorded literature, Matthew Rubery traces the path of innovation from Edison’s recitation of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” for his tinfoil phonograph in 1877, to the first novel-length talking books made for blinded World War I veterans, to today’s billion-dollar audiobook industry. The Untold Story of the Talking Book focuses on the social impact of audiobooks, not just the technological history, in telling a story of surprising and impassioned conflicts: from controversies over which books the Library of Congress selected to become talking books—yes to Kipling, no to Flaubert—to debates about what defines a reader. Delving into the vexed relationship between spoken and printed texts, Rubery argues that storytelling can be just as engaging with the ears as with the eyes, and that audiobooks deserve to be taken seriously. They are not mere derivatives of printed books but their own form of entertainment. We have come a long way from the era of sound recorded on wax cylinders, when people imagined one day hearing entire novels on mini-phonographs tucked inside their hats. Rubery tells the untold story of this incredible evolution and, in doing so, breaks from convention by treating audiobooks as a distinctively modern art form that has profoundly influenced the way we read. Praise for The Untold Story of the Talking Book “If audiobooks are relatively new to your world, you might wonder where they came from and where they’re going. And for general fans of the intersection of culture and technology, The Untold Story of the Talking Book is a fascinating read.” —Neil Steinberg, Chicago Sun-Times “[Rubery] explores 150 years of the audio format with an imminently accessible style, touching upon a wide range of interconnected topics . . . Through careful investigation of the co-development of formats within the publishing industry, Rubery shines a light on overlooked pioneers of audio . . . Rubery’s work succeeds in providing evidence to ‘move beyond the reductive debate’ on whether audiobooks really count as reading, and establishes the format’s rightful place in the literary family.” —Mary Burkey, Booklist (starred review)

It was local! It was national! It was international! All over the country and all over the world reporting was non-stop about a black mayor in Philadelphia who allowed a bomb to be dropped on members of MOVE who were also black. Eleven people were killed, six adults and five children. Whether your TV was turned on in the middle of the day, or the middle of the night, it was there. Reportedly the Tribune de Geneve, a Swiss newspaper called it "Blunder American Style", while a Japanese headline read "Police Drop Bomb on Black Extremists". A team of newspaper and TV reporters from Russia came into Philly looking for my sister LaVerne and I. They'd seen us on TV, couldn't find us when they got here, so called WHAT, a black Talk station here. Someone from the station called me, said they were here, but wouldn't give them our number instead took theirs.

The Untold Story is a channelled book, brought to you the reader by an ordinary woman, mother, and wife. Nothing like this had ever happened to her before - it was a major shock and way beyond her normal reality. Writing a book was the last thing on her mind and to discover that she could channel St Peter was an even bigger surprise. By leaving her business ambitions aside and trusting her spiritual journey, her faith was strong enough for her to believe and listen for the strong signs she was being given. She was then able to open herself up to hearing these important messages that were coming through from St Peter. Was there ever doubt? Of course, there were many times she felt like she was just making it all up. Yet her right arm would shake uncontrollably for her to write. If she didnt rise at 6am when her alarm went off for her channelling duties, the energy was so strong there were times when her husband, as he lay sleeping, got caught in the frenzy of the right arm flings! It was a sure sign to get up straight away! Also it would shake when she talked about this book to others who understood this calling, those who would not be alarmed by this special gift of communication. Each day during Lent 2017 and consistently until the twenty-ninth of June, the Feast Day of St. Peter and St. Paul, Denise scribed for St. Peter. On the last day of scribing, the Cross pen that had been gifted by a friend for the purpose of this book, ran out of ink on the last sentence. This book is a series of stories about Jesus and Peters life together as friends, from when they first met in their teens to bonding in their twenties, up until the night before Jesuss thirtieth birthday. Each chapter has a story and is concluded with Peters message. Peters message gives wisdom and advice relevant to twenty-first-century living in the language of today, which everyone can relate to. The Untold Storys time has come. People are ready to read and hear the truths about a time when Jesuss acts and messages were all centered on unconditional love. Religious institutions have distorted these truths. Now is a time for telling the untold story. Now is a time for raising consciousness. Now is a time for unconditional love in a world that needs to know. St. Peters time has come to tell and spread the word.

Forgetting about Spain’s civil war (1936–9) and subsequent dictatorship was long seen as a necessary safeguard for the democracy that emerged after General Francisco Franco’s death in 1975. Since the early 2000s, however, public discussion of historical memory has awakened efforts to remember this past through the personal testimonies of Spaniards who experienced it firsthand. Untold Stories expands accounts of twentieth-century Spain by presenting an ethnography of an ignored population: the impoverished men and women who fled Franco’s dictatorship in the 1960s, participating in a wave of labour migration to northern Europe. Now in their eighties, they were born around the time of the civil war and came of age during its repressive aftermath before leaving Spain as young adults. The book features a community of such Spaniards, who gather regularly at a senior centre on the outskirts of Paris. Drawing on concepts from linguistic anthropology, David Divita analyses conversational encounters recorded among the seniors to demonstrate how a turbulent past shapes mundane moments of social interaction in the present. Documenting what is said as well as what is not, Divita reveals through detailed textual analysis how silence can pervade the creation of social meanings – such as belonging, authority, and legitimacy. Untold Stories illuminates the impact of a harrowing historical period on some of Spain’s most marginal citizens in the early years of the dictatorship.

In an ironic reversal of the American dream, a staggering 20,000 members of the immigrant community of Midwood, Brooklyn (known as Little Pakistan), voluntarily left the United States after 9/11. Tram Nguyen reveals the human cost of the domestic war on terror and examines the impact of post-9/11 policies on people targeted because of immigration status, nationality, and religion. Nguyen’s evocative narrative reporting--about the families, detainees, local leaders, community advocates, and others living on the front lines--tells the stories of people who witnessed and experienced firsthand the unjust detainment or deportation of family members, friends, and neighbors. We meet Mohammad Butt, who died in detention in New Jersey, and the Saleems, who flee Queens for Canada. We even follow a self-proclaimed ’citizen patroller’ who monitors and detains immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border. We Are All Suspects Now, in the words of Mike Davis, “takes us inside a dark world . . . where the American Dream is fast turning into a nightmare and suggests proactive responses to stop our growing climate of xenophobia, intimidation, and discrimination."

All my life I wanted to tell my story. Also, while in college I enrolled in literature and English classes also computer studies. So that I would be qualified to write a book in the proper manner. However, my experiences in life also qualifies me to write this book. There is no other manuscript like the manuscript of life experiences which taught me how to deal and, conquer every thing that I desire to do in my life. In my opinion, life is just a mission, a journey that leads us to where we need to be. And until we die, we must do everything in our power to succeed in everything, and anything that you put your mind to. My personal life was not normal. I was a prisoner in my own home where I was supposed to feel safe and loved. Every day, I wondered when will the nightmare be over. Now, that I am free I desire to love, give, and laugh a lot. However, I have never been on an airplane, or on a vacation all I did in my life was work hard and take care of my kids. Some day, before I leave earth I hope I can accomplish some of the things that life has denied me due to the obligations that I had to honor while raising my children and, earning a living. There was a time when I was homeless with my children running from an extremely controlling and abusive husband. I used to make all of my children's clothes also mines as well. Life for me was a struggle every day. Astonishingly, somehow, I managed through prayer and trust in God to change my life. Right now, I live in a prestigious suburb. I raised all my daughters to be productive citizens in society. And I am proud to say that I am an professional which gives me pride in myself every time I save a life or maintain one. I refuse to let life tear me down any further than it has. Now I pray, that some day I will find a wonderful companion also, to travel and see places that I've never seen before, eat food that I've never eaten before, and find peace in my heart and maintain it until the day I die.
