The beginning of the Cold War began within days of the end of the Second World War, yet conscription still continued to replace the demobilisation of the existing armed forces still serving in war-torn Europe, the middle and Far East territories of the British Empire. Who better to replace them than over two million eligible eighteen year old young men who were thoroughly enjoying their freedom until a brown envelope fluttered through the letterbox informing: YOU'RE CONSCRIPTED LADDIE. This is a factual and personal story about the camaraderie that quickly developed among many during their enforced National Service. They did not want to do it, but I am sure that they, like me, had some great times apart from the shit that was dished out! I sincerely trust that the chapters within my story do relate to similar incidents, albeit under different circumstances, that occurred to thousands of others. For all of us it was a period of you had to do it. No ifs or buts and for many that did enjoy that way of life, and did re-enlist, good luck to them. Nevertheless, I can honestly say that I now look back with pride that I became one of the millions of young conscripts who did survive to tell the tale.

Our entire human structure is built for movement, for all aspects of life. This book offers a new theoretical framework for understanding integrated movement, based on the latest scientific models and practical explorations. Presenting a new interpretation of how Alexander developed his work, Easten covers twelve fundamentals of movement and shows how optimal movement is organised around sensory and spatial awareness, and our focus and goals. The book describes how to reawaken innate balanced movement possibilities. Up-to-date scientific research is woven into Alexander's concepts to give a whole picture of how the human body feels, perceives, and self-organises. Clarifying the functional anatomy that underpins the Alexander technique, this book explains how to utilize the power of the autonomic nervous system and spatial awareness to allow us to change old harmful movement habits and enable new body learning. Written accessibly and supported by illustrations and video demonstrations of techniques, this book is ideal for Alexander technique teachers and trainees, movement educators and somatic therapists.

“First class . . . a book that helps the reader to understand just what the ordinary soldier thought about his lot in the Great War.” —The Western Front Association This is a most unusual chronicle of the events of one man during the Great War. A professional soldier at the outbreak, Edward Roe was one of the first to cross over to France in 1914 and as such fought in the early battles of the war and took part in the Retreat from Mons. He was there for the crossing of the Marne and Aisne, the dreadful fighting at Ploegsteert and for the extraordinary events during the first Christmas. Remarkably he witnessed the debacle at Gallipoli and was part of the rear-guard of the Army during the re-embarkation and evacuation of the Peninsula. Thereafter the scene shifts to Mesopotamia and the Tigris Corps in the attempt to relieve General Townshend at Kut. Wounded he returned for the final campaign that captured Baghdad. “The author of these unique and extraordinarily moving diaries, which are supported by excellent maps and footnotes, was Edward Roe, an Irishman who had already served nine years with the British Army by the outbreak of the first world war.” —The Times

The death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, and the ensuing trial of Derek Chauvin for murder a year later has rubbed raw the bloodiest stain on the United States’ history and its world reputation. The nine minutes and 29 seconds during which Chauvin’s knee crushed the spark of life out of Floyd was not unusual in the history of the United States. Before the U.S. Civil War, slaves were routinely beaten to death for disobeying orders or running away, then often lynched. In roughly two centuries, Blacks have achieved nominal freedom. But, as this book’s opening chapter and expert essays that follow indicate, freedom has been conditional based on inequity of wealth, social, and legal discrimination. None of this is new in the United States; what is new is the number of people rising up in protest, a figure in the millions around the world after Floyd’s murder. This book supplies a readable, scholarly account of recent issues in race and racism in the United States that will be useful for general readers, undergraduate students, and their professors. It will be useful in many fields, including Black studies, other ethnic pursuits, United States history, law, criminal justice, intercultural communication, et al. The work contains a powerful historical narrative followed by several important, essays on subjects including George Floyd’s murder, the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and many other victims of systematic racism.

'The Bumpy Lane' is a metaphor for the twists, turns, bumps and difficulties of growing up that are experienced by most people. The author gives a vivid account of his first twenty years and the 'Bumpy Lane' of life that led to his future in an ever-changing Britain. The book presents a marvelous kaleidoscope of social history from the forties to the sixties, seen through the eyes of a very like able partisan! From the first page the author releases, with beguiling humour, incredibly bright sparks of intimacy and honesty, especially in documenting the very human relationships between the people he recalls. The book mirrors and reflects the social and technological changes that affected these very real people as seen through the eyes and experiences of a boy growing up in Bristol. The writer's style is often racy and he is always at the reader's elbow as he guides him or her along the paths of his childhood, his teenage years, and young adulthood.

A unique and gloriously nostalgic account of one eventful year in the fire service for readers who loved books such as CALL THE MIDWIFE and TRUST ME, I'M A VET. Nothing about the county fire service was quite what Malcolm expected when he joined the watch in Shrewsbury. As the newest member of the service he was first in line when swans terrorised the high street - and when a flock of owls got stuck on the roof of his local pub. Eighteen years old and more than ready to rush into burning buildings to save fair damsels in distress, young Malcolm soon realised he was more likely to be jumping into slurry pits and rivers to rescue any number of unfortunate animals. But for all the embarrassing situations Malcolm found himself in there were heart-stopping dramas too - and tragic farm and house fires. As he learns on the job and begins to win the respect of the old-timers, Malcolm starts to feel that maybe, one day, he just might make it as a fireman. But first he has to catch the eye of the smiley secretary in the office opposite the station ... Funny, moving and gloriously nostalgic, All Fired Up paints a unique portrait of rural Britain - and shows just how surprising a fireman's life can be.
