Excerpt from Upland Game Birds All of these are beautiful, the oddest appearing being the curiously marked Massena partridge, with the plumage of which Nature appears to have worked when in a playful mood, so strangely are the almost startling markings arranged. Excerpt from American Game Birds A book with this title might very properly commence with the most pop ular game birds and continue down the list to the least popular ones, but if we placed the Ruffed Grouse or the Bob-white in the van, some sportsman who believes there is no game but ducks would be sure to be offended. Since there is a natural order of birds that is adopted by scientists the world over, we have taken up our so - called game birds in this natural order, an arrange ment that brings the Mergansers or Fish Ducks to the fore, even though they are not desirable as an article of food. We have included all the ducks, even though many of them are not fit to eat, and also all the sandpipers, even though many of them are so tiny that none but the veriest novice would intentionally shoot them, for the reason that they are very commonly seen. Excerpt from Our Feathered Game: A Handbook of the North American Game Birds Ome years ago I was shooting ducks in North Dakota with some army Officers from Fort Totten. In looking over the bag one evening I found a number Of birds which were entirely new to me. Several Of them were not mentioned in any Of the books On field sports. It occurred to me then that a book describing every game bird would be a valu able addition to a Sportsman's library. The authors Of the earlier books had little or no experience west of the Alleghenies and many Of the birds now taken by sportsmen were unknown to them. When Audubon and Wilson wrote their ornithologies much of the Western country was inhabited by hostile Indians and was inaccessible. Audubon was aware of the existence Of the best American grouse, the sharp tail, but said that he was entirely unfamiliar with its habits. Forester had no acquaintance with the com mon prairie-grouse. All the birds are now known, and described, but the information is contained in many volumes, and is, for the most part, too technical to entertain Sportsmen. There is not today a complete manual of the feathered game Of North America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Land-Birds and Game-Birds of New England: With Descriptions of the Birds, Their Nests and Eggs, Their Habits and Notes, With Illustrations This volume has been written to fill a place hitherto vacant in ornithological literature. The works of Wilson, Audubon, and Nuttall, are costly, and rarely offered for sale, having been in a great measure superseded by modern authors. The recent and most complete work on American Ornithology, that of Messrs. Baird, Brewer, and Ridgway, is also costly. Mr. Samuels' book on the "Birds of New England and Adjacent States" has been thought too expensive to be within the reach of all, and more or less inaccurate and incomplete. Dr. Couses' admirable "Key to North American Birds," which is probably the best book of reference for collectors, and students of inanimate birds, treats merely of structure, classification, and specific descriptions.
