This book brings together the reflections of independent researchers from around the world. Sixteen authors from fourteen countries present their views on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in education, offering valuable insights through the examination of current issues relevant to the future of education. What will education be in tomorrow’s world? How can ICT be used without rendering education a purely technical process? How can we succeed the renovation of educational subjects without transforming them into technical objects? The introductory chapter of this publication guides us into the essays through a classification organized by the editors to illustrate different attitudes to technologies: • The ‘Globalizers’ see the integration of ICT and education as a means of enhancing the competitiveness of their society in a global economy; • The ‘Reformists’ see it as a means of bringing about significant change in didactics in the various disciplines, and even in the ‘basics’ of education; • The ‘Humanists’ consider technologies as possible catalysts for changing the aims and values of education from learni- oriented to humanistic; • The ‘Heretic’ sees values and aims as being determined exclusively by technology, and economy and culture as s- products of the technology-guided process. He therefore does not see any sense in interrogations as to which aims should guide us in integrating technology with education. Obviously, some arguments stretch across all four categories without completely matching any so-called type.

From a critically acclaimed and beloved storyteller comes a sweeping novel set aboard the Morning Light, a Nova Scotian merchant ship sailing through the South Pacific in 1912. Kay and Thea are half-sisters, separated in age by almost twenty years, but deeply attached. When their stern father dies, Thea travels to Nova Scotia for her long-promised marriage to the captain of the Morning Light. But she cannot abandon her orphaned young sister, so Kay too embarks on a life-changing journey to the other side of the world. At the heart of The Voyage of the Morning Light is a crystallizing moment in Micronesia: Thea, still mourning a miscarriage, forms a bond with a young boy from a remote island and takes him on board as her own son. Over time, the repercussions of this act force Kay, who considers the boy her brother, to examine her own assumptions—which are increasingly at odds with those of society around her—about what is forgivable and what is right. Inspired by a true story, Marina Endicott shows us a now-vanished world in all its wonder, and in its darkness, prejudice, and difficulty, too. She also brilliantly illuminates our present time through Kay’s examination of the idea of “difference”—between people, classes, continents, cultures, customs and species. The Voyage of the Morning Light is a breathtaking novel by a writer who has an astonishing ability to bring past worlds vividly to life while revealing the moral complexity of our own.

Statistical Rethinking written by Richard McElreath and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-13 with Mathematics categories.

Statistical Rethinking: A Bayesian Course with Examples in R and Stan builds your knowledge of and confidence in making inferences from data. Reflecting the need for scripting in today's model-based statistics, the book pushes you to perform step-by-step calculations that are usually automated. This unique computational approach ensures that you understand enough of the details to make reasonable choices and interpretations in your own modeling work. The text presents causal inference and generalized linear multilevel models from a simple Bayesian perspective that builds on information theory and maximum entropy. The core material ranges from the basics of regression to advanced multilevel models. It also presents measurement error, missing data, and Gaussian process models for spatial and phylogenetic confounding. The second edition emphasizes the directed acyclic graph (DAG) approach to causal inference, integrating DAGs into many examples. The new edition also contains new material on the design of prior distributions, splines, ordered categorical predictors, social relations models, cross-validation, importance sampling, instrumental variables, and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. It ends with an entirely new chapter that goes beyond generalized linear modeling, showing how domain-specific scientific models can be built into statistical analyses. Features Integrates working code into the main text Illustrates concepts through worked data analysis examples Emphasizes understanding assumptions and how assumptions are reflected in code Offers more detailed explanations of the mathematics in optional sections Presents examples of using the dagitty R package to analyze causal graphs Provides the rethinking R package on the author's website and on GitHub

An in-depth look into the transformation of visual culture and digital aesthetics First introduced by the German filmmaker Harun Farocki, the term operational images defines the expanding field of machine vision. In this study, media theorist Jussi Parikka develops Farocki’s initial concept by considering the extent to which operational images have pervaded today’s visual culture, outlining how data technologies continue to develop and disrupt our understanding of images beyond representation. Charting the ways that operational images have been employed throughout a variety of fields and historical epochs, Parikka details their many roles as technologies of analysis, capture, measurement, diagramming, laboring, (machine) learning, identification, tracking, and destruction. He demonstrates how, though inextricable from issues of power and control, operational images extend their reach far beyond militaristic and colonial violence and into the realms of artificial intelligence, data, and numerous aspects of art, media, and everyday visual culture. Serving as an extensive guide to a key concept in contemporary art, design, and media theory, Operational Images explores the implications of machine vision and the limits of human agency. Through a wealth of case studies highlighting the areas where imagery and data intersect, this book gives us unprecedented insight into the ever-evolving world of posthuman visuality. Signals in the Noise: An Exploration of Consciousness and Reality. How Current Research is Challenging Materialist Science "The Signals in the Noise," groundbreaking theories about consciousness are meticulously explored, presenting an avant-garde perspective that stands to challenge our traditional, materialist viewpoints. The author leads us on an intellectual journey, questioning established materialist scientific norms and bringing forward evidence that defies materialist theories of consciousness. The book emphasizes that consciousness persists and can even be enhanced when brain activity decreases, supported by numerous research studies involving psychedelics, near-death experiences, and other instances when brain functions are diminished. This new understanding suggests that consciousness transcends the physical confines of our biological makeup, challenging conventional notions about its origin and nature. Furthermore, the book introduces a transformative perspective on the universe, proposing that what we perceive as material is merely a function of our sensory systems. Based on the author's review of current theories of the composition of the cosmos, we now know everything that exists is composed of energy, with physicality representing deeper qualities that lie out of our reach. Drawing on proven quantum physics, the author presents the theory that the universe's interconnectedness is a product of coherent quantum fields from which everything emerges and takes on the character of separateness and materiality in the 4D or manifest level we experience. In a radical departure from mainstream materialist thought, "The Signals in the Noise" argues that consciousness is a universal phenomenon occurring in varying degrees of complexity across all organisms. The author posits that while the presence of proto-consciousness is universal, the consciousness we experience emerges in the fourth-dimensional or manifest level, an idea that, if widely accepted, can redefine our understanding of life and existence. Finally, the author criticizes the materialist worldview, stating that this ingrained belief system creates many societal, political, religious, and environmental problems. He argues that our obstinate adherence to materialist orthodoxy drives our trajectory toward planetary destruction. Catalyzed by our capitalist system of consumption, this materialist belief system hinders our ability to recognize and correct the adverse effects of our actions. "The Signals in the Noise" is a compelling critique of the materialist worldview, challenging our understanding of consciousness, existence, and our place in the universe. It underscores the urgency to redefine our perspectives to avert the catastrophic trajectory that our current beliefs are driving us toward. This book is a radical and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in consciousness, quantum physics, and the future of our planet.
