"This book is an archaeological investigation of four New Orleans neighborhoods that were replaced by public housing projects around World War II. Each of these neighborhoods was identified as a "slum" historically, but the material record challenges the simplicity of this designation. Gray provides evidence of the inventiveness of former residents who were marginalized by class, color, or gender, whose everyday strategies of survival, subsistence, and spirituality challenged the city's developing racial and social hierarchies. Slum clearance at the national scale was a form of erasure, in which whole neighborhoods and their all-too-complicated realities were obliterated from the built environment of cities across the United Sates. In New Orleans, from the St. Thomas Housing Project, which replaced the working-class riverfront Irish Channel, to Iberville, constructed over what remained of the Storyville red light district, the logics of clearance inevitably revolved around the complexities of race. This work uses both documents and archaeological data to examine what this entailed at a variety of scales, reconstructing narratives of the households and communities affected by clearance. Public housing, both in New Orleans and elsewhere, imposed a new kind of control on urban life that had the effect of making cities both more segregated and more unequal. The story of the neighborhoods that were destroyed provides a reminder that this was not an inevitable outcome, and that a more equitable and just city is still possible today"--

Arkansas has long been recognized as a state with a rich archaeological heritage that is unsurpassed in North America. The Toltec Mounds were made famous by the Smithsonian's research at the turn of the century. The Sloan site, dated to 8500 B.C., is the oldest documented burial ground in the New World. The alluvial plain of the central Mississippi River valley supported perhaps the greatest prehistoric urban population. And the Parkin site has yielded important information about the de Soto incursion into the continent. This festschrift recognizes the contributions made in researching this varied heritage by Dan and Phyllis Morse from the inception of the Arkansas Archeological Survey in 1967 to their retirement in 1997. The essays were prepared by thirteen of their colleagues, recognized experts in archaeology and related fields, and represent state-of-the-art knowledge about Arkansas's archaeology. The topics range broadly: from prehistoric environments and regional syntheses to specialized studies of specific culture periods and historical archaeology. Improving the relationship between archaeology and local government represents one of the next great challenges facing archaeology –specifically archaeology done in urban settings. Not only does local government have access to powerful legal tools and policy mechanisms that can offer protection for privately owned archaeological sites, but because local government exists at the grassroots level, it is also often closer to people who have deep knowledge about the community itself, about its values, and about the local meaning of the sites most in need of protection. This partnership between archaeology and local government can also provide visibility and public programing for heritage sites. This book will explore the experiences, both positive and negative, of small and large cities globally. We have examined programs in the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly known as the British Commonwealth) and in the United States. These countries share similar perspectives on preservation and heritage, although the approaches these cities have taken to address municipal archaeology reveals considerable diversity. The case studies highlight how these innovative partnerships have developed, and explain how they function within local government. Engaging with the political sphere to advocate for and conduct archaeology requires creativity, flexibility, and the ability to develop collaborative partnerships.
