This book sets out to develop a quantitative-based analysis, Form Syntax, which is able to identify various prototypes of urban forms and their degrees of urbanity, thereby enhancing urban design practices. Form Syntax is a combination of emerging quantitative analysis tools with qualitative urban morphology tradition. It integrates a set of spatial analysis tools including Space Syntax, Spacematrix, and Mixed-use index (MXI) through GIS to measure the morphological features of streets, buildings and blocks, and functions. Furthermore, the Form Syntax assists in comprehending the intrinsic, evolving logic of urban form. Based on the findings of urban morphology, the Urban Form Index could function as an analytical instrument in numerous phases of the urban design process, thereby promoting urban vitality. Moreover, morphology-led understandings of urban design theory can inform urban design practices. This study endeavors to introduce quantitative thinking into urban morphology and urban design, with the objective of developing a lively built environment and pursuing more vibrant place-making.

The rising goal of urbanity in urban design requires deeper insights in urban morphological elements and their effects on urbanity. Nevertheless, qualitative-based and manual-based classical urban morphology cannot fulfil this need. Advances in quantitative morphological analysis tools and the widely use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) bring the new possibility towards addressing such need. This study aims to develop a quantitative-based analysis, Urban Form Index, which is able to identify various prototypes of urban forms and their degrees of urbanity, thereby enhancing urban design practices. Urban Form Index is a combination of emerging quantitative analysis tools with qualitative urban morphology tradition. It integrates a set of spatial analysis tools including Space Syntax, Spacematrix, and Mixed-use index (MXI) through GIS to measure the morphological features of streets, buildings and blocks, and functions. This capacity of Urban Form Index in reflecting urbanity is preliminary tested through GPS tracking of the intensity of optional activities which works as a good proxy of urbanity. Urban Form Index also helps in the understanding of inherent evolving logic of urban form. Based on the study in urban morphology, Urban Form Index could work as an analytical tool in many phases of the urban design process for promoting urbanity. Furthermore, morphology-led understandings of urban design theory can inform urban design practices. This study attempts to introduce quantitative thinking into urban morphology and urban design to help to develop a lively built environment and pursue more vibrant place-making. This is a book about cities or, more precisely, about the physical form of cities. This book offers insight into the most important scientific society on urban morphology worldwide: the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF). After addressing the three-decade history of ISUF, the book analyses the present and future of this scientific society, of urban morphology, and of human settlements. This timely and fundamental reflection gathers contributions from present and past leadership of ISUF since its inception in 1994. Over the last three decades, the urban world has undergone major changes: the urban population is now higher than the rural population; more than half of the world's population lives on a single continent—Asia, home to almost three billion people in China and India alone—so geographical imbalance is considerable; and while half of the urban population still lives in small cities of fewer than 300,000 inhabitants, the number of megacities has increased significantly. How does the physical form of cities in different parts of the world respond to these dynamics? Can cities preserve fundamental elements of humankind's urban heritage while accommodating changes driven by the main socioeconomic and environmental needs of today?
