Whether you are an urban geographer, an urban sociologist or an urban political scientist, and whether you take a qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods approach, the challenge that confronts researchers of our increasingly "globalized" urban studies remains fundamentally the same—how to make sense of urban complexity. This book confronts this challenge by exploring the various methodological approaches for doing global urban research, including Comparative Urbanism, Social Network Analysis, and Data Visualization. With contributions from leading scholars across the world, Doing Global Urban Research offers a key forum to discuss how the practice of research can deepen our knowledge of globalized urbanization.

Mobility Data Driven Urban Traffic Monitoring written by Zhidan Liu and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-18 with Computers categories.

This book introduces the concepts of mobility data and data-driven urban traffic monitoring. A typical framework of mobility data-based urban traffic monitoring is also presented, and it describes the processes of mobility data collection, data processing, traffic modelling, and some practical issues of applying the models for urban traffic monitoring. This book presents three novel mobility data-driven urban traffic monitoring approaches. First, to attack the challenge of mobility data sparsity, the authors propose a compressive sensing-based urban traffic monitoring approach. This solution mines the traffic correlation at the road network scale and exploits the compressive sensing theory to recover traffic conditions of the whole road network from sparse traffic samplings. Second, the authors have compared the traffic estimation performances between linear and nonlinear traffic correlation models and proposed a dynamical non-linear traffic correlation modelling-based urban traffic monitoring approach. To address the challenge of involved huge computation overheads, the approach adapts the traffic modelling and estimations tasks to Apache Spark, a popular parallel computing framework. Third, in addition to mobility data collected by the public transit systems, the authors present a crowdsensing-based urban traffic monitoring approach. The proposal exploits the lightweight mobility data collected from participatory bus riders to recover traffic statuses through careful data processing and analysis. Last but not the least, the book points out some future research directions, which can further improve the accuracy and efficiency of mobility data-driven urban traffic monitoring at large scale. This book targets researchers, computer scientists, and engineers, who are interested in the research areas of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), urban computing, big data analytic, and Internet of Things (IoT). Advanced level students studying these topics benefit from this book as well.

With urbanization as a global phenomenon, there is a need for data and information about these terrains. Urban remote sensing techniques provide critical physical input and intelligence for preparing base maps, formulating planning proposals, and monitoring implementations. Likewise these methodologies help with understanding the biophysical properties, patterns, and process of urban landscapes, as well as mapping and monitoring urban land cover and spatial extent. Advanced sensor technologies and image processing methodologies such as deep learning, data mining, etc., facilitate the wide applications of remote sensing technology in urban areas. This book presents advanced image processing methods and algorithms focused on three very important roots of urban remote sensing: 3D urban modelling using different remotely sensed data, urban orthophotomap generation, and urban feature extraction, which are also today’s real challenges in high resolution remote sensing. Data generated by remote sensing, with its repetitive and synoptic viewing and multispectral capabilities, constitutes a powerful tool for mapping and monitoring emerging changes in the city's urban core, as well as in peripheral areas. Features: Provides advances in emerging methods and algorithms in image processing and technology Uses algorithms and methodologies for handling high-resolution imagery from a ground sampling distance (GSD) less than 1.0 meter Focuses on 3D urban modelling, orthorectification methodologies, and urban feature extraction algorithms from high-resolution remotely sensed imagery Demonstrates how to apply up-to-date techniques to the problems identified and how to analyze research results Presents methods and algorithms for monitoring, analyzing, and modeling urban growth, urban planning, and socio-economic developments In this book, readers are provided with valuable research studies and applications-oriented chapters in areas such as urban trees, soil moisture mapping, city transportation, urban remote sensing big data, etc.
