Using data from a 2011 national household survey, this paper examines the factors shaping urban residents' prejudice toward rural-to-urban migrants and the impacts of prejudice on rural migrants' integration into urban communities. The results show that urban residents with higher education and household income report stronger prejudice. Also, urban residents with urban hukou at birth, are more prejudiced toward rural migrants. Given that hukou status at birth is tied to the parental hukou status, this result implies that prejudice can transfer across generations. With regards to the impacts on rural migrants' integration, prejudice reduces their perceived social standing and increases the number of livelihood problems encountered. On the other hand, prejudice is associated with stronger self-identification as an urbanite and more willingness to interact with urban residents. There are two possible explanations. First, in a prejudicial society, there may exist a strong negative connotation associated with the identity as a ruralite, which causes rural migrants not to rather consider themselves as urbanites. Second, since urban residents of high socio-economic status report stronger prejudice, rural migrants may want to network with those urban residents, who can provide assistance in job search and access to government resources.

While much has been written about rural migrant workers’ experiences in the big cities, population movements into China’s vast network of towns and small cities has been largely neglected. This book presents a detailed case study of rural migrant workers experiences in a small town in a north China county. The author explores the processes and institutions that enable or preclude the social inclusion of rural workers into the town’s socio-economic system. Inclusion and exclusion are assessed through an examination of rural workers’ immersion into the urban labour market, their access to welfare benefits and to social services, such as housing, education and health. The book proposes that outside the larger cities there are alternative accounts of urban social change and of the integration of rural migrant workers. It stresses the fact that the particular socio-economic structure of towns, where the state-owned share of the economy has been smaller and where consequently social and private forces have been more active, allowed for a more open inclusion of rural workers. Though shortcomings are still observed, the book suggests that China's transformation may not necessarily result in dysfunctional and socially polarized urban environments. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of China’s rural migrant workers, bottom-up urbanization and small town development, social policy, and more broadly on contemporary social change in China.

By zooming in on urban localities in India and by unpacking the 'meaning of the local' for those who live in them, the ten papers in this volume redress a recurrent asymmetry in contemporary debates about globalisation. In much literature, the global is associated with transnationalism, dynamism and activity, and the local with static identities and history. Focusing on a range of locales in India's metropolitan areas and provincial small towns, the contributions move beyond the assertion that space is socially constructed to explore the ways in which social and political relations are themselves spatially and historically contingent. Using detailed ethnography, the authors highlight the vitality of place-making in the lives of urban dwellers and the centrality of a 'politics of place' in the production of power, difference and inequality.
