Urban Shots: Bright Lights is a kaleidoscopic collection of short stories, at once delightful, intense and disturbing, each narrated with an honesty of voice that peels off the layers of contemporary India to reveal its core. In the humorous 'Maami Menace', Sathyavati racks her brains to escape an overbearing elderly lady; the charming 'Good Morning Nikhil' follows a baby's antics around the house; and in the curiously touching 'Hot Masala', Mr Kamath hatches a wicked plan to show his family better days. Filled with compassion, wisdom and gentle humour, the stories in this anthology are as much about urban India as they are about the flawed people who inhabit it.

Celluloid Vampires written by Stacey Abbott and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-15 with Performing Arts categories.

In 1896, French magician and filmmaker George Méliès brought forth the first celluloid vampire in his film Le manoir du diable. The vampire continues to be one of film's most popular gothic monsters and in fact, today more people become acquainted with the vampire through film than through literature, such as Bram Stoker's classic Dracula. How has this long legacy of celluloid vampires affected our understanding of vampire mythology? And how has the vampire morphed from its folkloric and literary origins? In this entertaining and absorbing work, Stacey Abbott challenges the conventional interpretation of vampire mythology and argues that the medium of film has completely reinvented the vampire archetype. Rather than representing the primitive and folkloric, the vampire has come to embody the very experience of modernity. No longer in a cape and coffin, today's vampire resides in major cities, listens to punk music, embraces technology, and adapts to any situation. Sometimes she's even female. With case studies of vampire classics such as Nosferatu, Martin, Blade, and Habit, the author traces the evolution of the American vampire film, arguing that vampires are more than just blood-drinking monsters; they reflect the cultural and social climate of the societies that produce them, especially during times of intense change and modernization. Abbott also explores how independent filmmaking techniques, special effects makeup, and the stunning and ultramodern computer-generated effects of recent films have affected the representation of the vampire in film.

The year is 2016 in the mist of the “great recession” hangs like an ominous storm cloud in the backdrop of this story, which is told in hindsight through the blogs of a chick named Isis. In her sometimes salacious narrative, this iTrills.com blogger, has taken her readers back in time when she was a young crazy-sexy-cool ride-or-die type that shamelessly rocked a red flag. She knew more computer codes than a Silicon Valley whiz-kid. Readers of her blog also get a peek into her sizzling hot sexual affair with a devilishly influential guerilla-gansta’ named Soulja: leader of the notorious B.R.M. clique, and founder of the even more influential iTrilla.com. Never mind that Isis has a man that worships her like her goddess name. She’s become a drifting moth attracted to the flame of Soulja ever since she and her boyfriend met him. While still in the hands of the Feds, Soulja evolved into an informed convict disguised as a blogger. Unfortunately for the powers-that-be he is laced with controversial convictions that has inspired millions. Soon after his release into the free world, he covertly used his own social networking site to chop-it-up with other leaders of illicit underground street orgs. With them he devises a “radical” blueprint to destroy every prison plantation in America: hoping to create a slavery revolt just like the legend of his hero Nat Turner. Of course, no plan of this magnitude could ever unravel without a significant glitch.

Place And Politics In Latin American Digital Culture written by Claire Taylor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-09 with Art categories.

This volume explores one of the central issues that has been debated in internet studies in recent years: locality, and the extent to which cultural production online can be embedded in a specific place. The particular focus of the book is on the practices of net artists in Latin America, and how their work interrogates some of the central place-based concerns of Latin(o) American identity through their on- and offline cultural practice. Six particular works by artists of different countries in Latin America and within Latina/o communities in the US are studied in detail, with one each from Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, the US-Mexico border, and the US. Each chapter explores how each artist represents place in their works, and, in particular how traditional place-based affiliations, or notions of territorial identity, end up reproduced, re-affirmed, or even transformed online. At the same time, the book explores how these net.artists make use of new media technologies to express alternative viewpoints about the locations they represent, and use the internet as a space for the recuperation of cultural memory.
