This volume investigates how urban growth and prosperity transformed the cities of the Roman Mediterranean in the last centuries BCE and the fi rst centuries CE, integrating debates about Roman urban space with discourse on Roman urban history. In Roman cities, boundaries were an important way of defining spaces. The significance of such boundaries was mediated by specific cultural rules. Besides physical boundaries, such as city walls and gates, also immaterial ones, such as the pomerium, demarcated an urban context.
