Moderne, funktional differenzierte, gleichzeitig aber vertikal stratifizierte Gesellschaften sind urban geprägt. Ihre Ungleichheitsstrukturen haben nicht nur soziale, sondern auch räumliche Dimensionen, die sich in Differenzen innerhalb von Städten, zwischen verschiedenen Städten, aber auch im Verhältnis zwischen Städten und dem ländlich geprägten Raum bzw. zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie ausdrücken. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes bringen zwei Bereiche der Soziologie, die Sozialstrukturanalyse und die Stadt-und Regionalsoziologie, die empirisch oft kooperierten, aber sich seltener über hierfür relevante Konzepte verständigten, in einen Dialog. Die Beiträge beschreiben und analysieren soziale und räumliche Ungleichheiten in städtischen oder ländlichen Lebenswelten und werfen gleichzeitig die Frage auf, wie die aktuelle Gestalt räumlicher Ungleichheiten konturiert und produziert wird.

Der Arabische Frühling nahm 2010 in Tunesien seinen Anfang. Eine tragende Rolle fiel dabei der Jugend zu. Doch haben sich ihre Lebensbedingungen seit der Revolution angesichts wirtschaftlicher Probleme und gesellschaftlicher Spannungen verbessert? Johannes Frische untersucht die Erwerbs- und Einkommensstrategien der Bewohner benachteiligter Stadtgebiete. Das Ergebnis ist ernüchternd: Vor allem junge Menschen haben nach wie vor kaum Chancen auf Teilhabe. Strukturelle Erwerbslosigkeit, Informalität und Prekarität prägen ihren Alltag. Am Beispiel des Vorortes Ettadhamen verdeutlicht er die Folgen stadtgeschichtlicher Entwicklungen im Großraum Tunis: räumlich-soziale Segregation, wirtschaftliche Perspektivlosigkeit und soziale Marginalisierung. Seine Analyse zeigt auf, wie Übergänge ins Erwerbsleben und in die Phase der Familiengründung hinausgezögert oder blockiert werden. Die Vielfalt prekärer Lebenslagen im Spannungsfeld zwischen Teilhabe und Ausgrenzung wird sichtbar.

The book addresses urban transformations towards sustainability in light of challenges of global urbanization processes and the consequences of global environmental change. The aim is to show that urban transformations only succeed if both innovative scientific solutions and practice-oriented governance approaches are developed. This assumption is addressed by providing theoretical insights and empirical evidence pointing particularly at 3 concepts or qualities which are determined here as being central for achieving urban sustainability: resource efficiency, quality of life and resilience. Urban case studies from several international research projects illustrate our conceptual approach of urban transformations towards sustainable development. Thus, the book reaches far beyond a mere additive description of single case studies. It incorporates the results of condensed synthesis, resulting from comparisons and evaluations. It provides, based on cross-cutting reflection of single cases and different scales and methods of analysis, general and transferable findings. They do not only consider the scientific sphere but deliberately go beyond it discussing transferability of knowledge into practice, governance options and the feasibility of policy strategies in order to pave the way for sustainable urban transformations to happen today and in the future.

This open access publication examines the impact of connected and automated vehicles on the European city and the conditions that can enable this technology to make a positive contribution to urban development. The authors argue for two theses that have thus far received little attention in scientific discourse: as connected and automated vehicles will not be ready for use in all parts of the city for a long time, previously assumed effects – from traffic safety to traffic performance as well as spatial effects – will need to be re-evaluated. To ensure this technology has a positive impact on the mobility of the future, transport and settlement policy regulations must be adapted and further developed. Established territorial, institutional and organizational boundaries must be investigated and challenged quickly. Despite – or, indeed, because of – the many uncertainties, we find ourselves at the beginning of a new design phase, not only in terms of technology development, but also regarding politics, urban planning, administration and civil society.

Danielle Gluns examines how urban housing governance reacts to the onset of urban growth in an internationally comparative perspective. The study is based on in‐depth case studies of Washington, D.C., which is an example of primarily market‐based interactions, and Vienna, which has traditionally pursued an active steering role of the local state. The author assesses the goals of urban development formulated by local actors and analyzes their translation into housing policies within the respective governance structures. She demonstrates that path dependence is an important feature of urban housing governance, with relationships, ideologies, and physical urban structures leading to stability. Even so, change is possible, as both systems integrate new policy elements. At the same time, both structures perpetuate inequality in the urban housing system by excluding some of the most disadvantaged groups from decision‐making.
