Este libro sobre urbanismo y vivienda obrera en Alcoy tiene un doble enfoque, el local y el general. En su inicio se describen diversos modelos de urbanismo que durante los siglos xix y xx configuraron nuestras ciudades, en él se estudian las figuras del barón Haussmann, Ildefonso Cerdá, Arturo Soria y César Cort, que personalizan algunos de esos modelos. En Alcoy se reflejaron las principales ideas urbanísticas del siglo xix y xx. Destaca su temprano Plan de Ensanche y Rectificación, redactado en 1875 y aprobado en 1878. El ingeniero Enrique Vilaplana Juliá y el profesor Teodoro Balaciart Tormo fueron los artífices de ese proyecto. En Alcoy el proceso de industrialización conllevó gravísimos problemas de alojamiento para la clase trabajadora, esa situación es descrita con su fuerte carga social. El higienismo histórico aparece relatado junto con las aspiraciones de toda una época. Jorge Doménech Romá es profesor titular de la Universidad de Alicante y añade al conjunto de sus libros de geometría descriptiva y arquitectura histórica este nuevo libro.

The twofold origin of the planning concept found expression in two schools of nineteenth-century thought: the Utopians—Owen, Saint-Simon, Fourier—and their active vision of the town as a self-sufficient, coherent organism are contrasted with the specialists and officials who endeavored to remedy each urban defect individually by introducing new health regulations and social legislation into already existing towns.
