Poco se sabe respecto de los uruguayos en la Argentina, de ahí la necesidad de este libro donde, por un lado, se ofrece una reconstrucción del proceso inmigratorio a partir de los diferentes contextos en el país de origen y en el de destino, que determinaron las dinámicas de la inmigración uruguaya a lo largo de más de cien años y en las transformaciones en la composición de esa población inmigrante según la información sociodemográfica, haciendo hincapié en su inserción laboral. Por otro lado, se da cuenta del movimiento asociativo uruguayo en la Argentina, sus expresiones políticas, sociales, ciudadanas y artísticas, además del perfil general de sus miembros. De esta forma, se abordan las manifestaciones del ser uruguayo desplegadas en la Argentina: cómo las personas construyen un nosotros y cómo representan esa pertenencia grupal. En este sentido, se apunta a demostrar que la colectividad uruguaya en la Argentina no se encuentra asimilada o diluida en la sociedad mayor, situación generalmente atribuida a las afinidades sociales, culturales y lingüísticas, entre otras. Por el contrario, se verá que los uruguayos en este país presentan una vida activa, dinámica y compleja que abarca diferentes intereses, objetivos y fluctuaciones en el tiempo. Tienen una identidad propia que ha perdurado sin que ello actúe en desmedro de su integración al país de recepción, Argentina.
