'Outline of U.S. History' is a publication of the U.S. Department of State. The first edition (1949-50) was produced under the editorship of Francis Whitney, first of the State Department Office of International Information and later of the U.S. Information Agency. Richard Hofstadter, professor of history at Columbia University, and Wood Gray, professor of American history at The George Washington University, served as academic consultants. D. Steven Endsley of Berkeley, California, prepared additional material. It has been updated and revised extensively over the years by, among others, Keith W. Olsen, professor of American history at the University of Maryland, and Nathan Glick, writer and former editor of the USIA journal, Dialogue. Alan Winkler, professor of history at Miami University (Ohio), wrote the post-World War II chapters for previous editions. This new edition has been completely revised and updated by Alonzo L. Hamby, Distinguished Professor of History at Ohio University. Professor Hamby has written extensively on American politics and society.

Excerpt from Notes on Early American History This little book is the outgrowth of class-room work and is to be used as a supplement to any standard work on American history. The notes cover the first three periods of our history, or to the time of Washington's administration. Experience and observation have shown that interest must be awakened in the early history of our country, or pupils will have a distaste for history in general; and that, if the early history of America, which is our real history, be understood and appreciated, no difficulty will arise in studying the later development of the country. A pupil who has rightly learned American history has laid a foundation for good reading and has acquired an interest in the history of other nations. It has seemed to me that most of our very excellent school histories are somewhat difficult for young students to comprehend. To meet this difficulty, I began, three or four years ago, to give notes to the class, showing them how to study, and how to treat, in a logical manner, the topic under consideration. Having no thought of publishing the notes I made free use of any and all text-books at hand, so that, to some extent, the book is a compilation. Excerpt from History by Topic: A Collection of Notes and Outlines of U. S. History, as Used in the Class Room of the Author This little book has been prepared, as its title indicates, as a guide for a topical history class; and has been used by the author for many years with marked success. It will, also, be found very useful for reviews or for reference. For use in the class, we would recommend that first the outline at the heading of each chapter be thoroughly learned (where no outline is given, the paragraph heads may be used). Let each pupil be able to write it upon the board; or, one write as the others dictate. Next study each item; the number for each lesson must vary with their importance and the capabilities of the pupils; but be thorough. The more kinds of text-books the better, as each author will have something that the others have not. Review often. Trace the causes of every important event; also, its effects. Any goo-d anecdote that you may give concerning an event, will help to impress that event upon the pupil's mind. Show them that peace is better than war, and that Hon esty is the best policy; giving as examples such contrasts as Richard H. Lee and Burr, Washington and Arnold, or Jackson and Buchanan. Do not dwell upon the detail of battle but upon its cause and effect. Learn few dates; a few important ones to mark epochs around which the others group - what care we whether a battle was fought May Ist or August 16th? We wish for results. To teach history, or any other branch, get your pupil interested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A resource for all who teach and study history, this book illuminates the unmistakable centrality of American Indian history to the full sweep of American history. The nineteen essays gathered in this collaboratively produced volume, written by leading scholars in the field of Native American history, reflect the newest directions of the field and are organized to follow the chronological arc of the standard American history survey. Contributors reassess major events, themes, groups of historical actors, and approaches--social, cultural, military, and political--consistently demonstrating how Native American people, and questions of Native American sovereignty, have animated all the ways we consider the nation's past. The uniqueness of Indigenous history, as interwoven more fully in the American story, will challenge students to think in new ways about larger themes in U.S. history, such as settlement and colonization, economic and political power, citizenship and movements for equality, and the fundamental question of what it means to be an American. Contributors are Chris Andersen, Juliana Barr, David R. M. Beck, Jacob Betz, Paul T. Conrad, Mikal Brotnov Eckstrom, Margaret D. Jacobs, Adam Jortner, Rosalyn R. LaPier, John J. Laukaitis, K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Robert J. Miller, Mindy J. Morgan, Andrew Needham, Jean M. O'Brien, Jeffrey Ostler, Sarah M. S. Pearsall, James D. Rice, Phillip H. Excerpt from A Pamphlet of Original Documents of United States History: Edited With Notes It is now generally conceded that high school and normal school students should do some work with the source method in the study of U. S. history. With rare exceptions but little has been accomplished in this line below collegiate courses, owing to the difficulty in placing material within reach of the pupils. It is next to impossible to have all pupils in a class use the source material at the command of most high schools, without the loss of a great amount of time which must be taken from a course of study already crowded to the limit. A few pupils in all classes can readily find access to original documents, the majority cannot. This pamphlet is prepared to afford, at a small cost, an opportunity for any pupil to study in original form a few documents bearing upon the important events of history. Some prominence has been given to financial documents for the reason that the financial question has been and always will continue to be one of the great problems for solution by nations and individuals, and most school text books treat the subject inadequately or indefinitely. Selection has been made only of such material as is of vital importance. No pretension is made to give anything new, rare, or, to give a great variety of documents. An acquaintance with a few of the source documents may cultivate a taste or create a desire for a more extended course of study of such material which forms the basis of all sound historical knowledge.
